5 Lessons I Learned from my TEDx Talk

by Terry Brock, - @terrybrock on Steemit

A while back I had the honor to speak for the TEDxBocaRaton event where I had a wonderful experience.I want to share 5 lessons I learned preparing for that and presenting that can also help you not only if you have a big presentation to make, but also in other projects you encounter. Hi, I’m Terry Brock and I wanted to share these lessons I learn to help you in some practical, real-world applications.

TED stands for Technology, Education and Design. It is a movement that has given the world a wealth of information mostly in the famous 18 minutes or less allowed for presentations (a rare few have gone over the 18 minute limit).

As I thought about what happened to me, I thought of how you could use some of the principles in your life for building business and personal development.

Here are 5 lessons I learned from my TEDx talk:

Lesson #1 - Preparation is not an option. Even though I’m a professional speaker and have traveled around the world, speaking at a TEDx event was different from any other presentation I’ve given. That 18 minute limit means you have to prepare more than ever. From that preparation I was able to cut filler, polish away some rough edges, and develop a tightly-organized presentation which I had never delivered before.

Lesson #2 - Repetition is the mother of learning. I carved my presentation down to much less than 18 minutes and by repeating it over and over —- improving with each relentless repetition —— I ended up with a much better style and form than when I started.

Lesson #3 - Be concise. This is not only necessary for a TED talk, but today’s short-attention-span mentality demands it. Learn to keep your message concise, simple, and to the point.

Lesson #4 - Get advice from the best. I have to thank Becky Woodbridge, the organizer of the event, for her help in selecting just the right title and presentation. I also have to thank fellow professional speaker, and superb speech coach, Lou Heckler, for his advice and help. When you have a big event and a lot is on the line, don’t depend on yourself alone. Get top-notch coaches and advisers.

Lesson #5 - Adapt and roll with the punches. Life happens. Things break. Things sometimes won’t go as planned. Nothing egregious happened at our event but it was held in an amphitheater and the wind and outside noises caused some challenges. Some props were knocked over and sometimes we heard sounds we didn’t want to hear. However, everything went just fine. Learning to “roll with the punches” and adapt is a great skill at any time.

Perhaps some of these principles can help you in the next big event where you have to be “on” and perform. Whatever it is, the concepts and principles respected and demonstrated at a TED event can teach all of us a lot.

The presentation is titled, “How to overcome overwhelmed,” and it addresses the issue that many complain about today. People often feel overwhelmed with technology and other duties. In this presentation I talked about several specific steps you can take to overcome being overwhelmed. Pay particular attention to the “No Way to Not Yet!” theme that I talk about. I’ve had many people say that helped them in a very practical way.

a nice presentation, all many people interested

Thank you for the reminder to prepare and prepare again. Sometimes you think you have it all down and then a question will come up or someone will suggest something that throws you off. I've found being prepared helps me jump back into the flow, while still finding time to answer a question.

Wow! I have 100s of tedx talks, I've really learnt from them, I never knew you had spoken on the tedx, I'm definitely downloading it. I really like your last point, 'adapting with life's punches' several time we come across situations that are beyond out control and instead of adapting to it and finding a way around it, we complain and blame circumstances. I think this post will be very helpful to the general steemit populace. Thumbs up sir. Regards
