Some want to make the distinction between "propaganda"—manipulating others with lies—and marketing—manipulating others with truth. But is this an accurate distinction? Or is it possible to use truthful information in propaganda. Join James as he explores an example of true propaganda from WWII and calls on the audience for more examples.

Indeed, paraphrasing an adage which ensemble musicians know very well:

A truth at the wrong time is a lie.
A lie at the right time is a truth.

I also completely disagree that propaganda refers to 'Lies'. Some of the most effective propaganda has been truth, usually partially revealed at the right time.

As soon as I heard truth vs lie was the litmus test for propaganda, I knew he was wrong.

In Latin based language, common advertisements are called propaganda. Truth is not a determining factor. Intent is.

Propaganda is any communication that seeks to manipulate the audience. This could be for political reasons or a group of mothers in your town.

We the people should concern ourselves with government propaganda because they work for us. They are supposed to have way more limits because they have the monopoly on force. For better or worse, we cannot ignore our civic duty to limit our government's power.

Some propaganda is factual.
