Is Technology Creating A Reality That Isn't Real?!

So let us jump in my brain for just a minute.

I was driving through town the other day talking with Stacie D (@freedomtowrite), and my mind started wandering about reality. Some say that reality is just what is and what is all around us. I don't think it is that simple.

I believe that there could be an infinite number of realities, and our single decisions decide which one we experience. This lead me to the idea technology connecting everyone in a way that they never were before.

Used to be that we all had our own lives, and we created our own reality. Now, we all seem to share so much via social media that we are sharing in a reality that we are creating together.

The issue is that we really only share our high light reel on social media. So we are very interactive, and even defend the new reality that we share....even when it is not the full picture of our lives.

Is technology creating a reality that is not real?!

I think technology is altering our perspectives and experiences but I do not think it is, or even can, create reality.

Reality is the uncreated and if you are real, you are reality (uncreated) but your self (mind, thoughts, experiences) is not real.

Your self is merely a group of ideas, fabrications and inventions created about reality.. not reality.

There is a many worlds theory but I personally have a Many Minds Theory:

  • There is only one reality (You) but many minds experiencing ideas & thoughts in false realities (Your self).

Your self changes, you do not. Anything that changes was simply created and will ultimately be destroyed.

I feel that reality is what we believe to be true in our world. I feel that technology can distort our reality, but only if we let it. If our only exposure to the outside world was Facebook, what we believe to to be true would be vastly different than if that exposure was only through CNN. Unfortunately, too many people rely solely on technology and ignore the real things happening around them. Case in point: when Obamacare took effect, I asked many people if it benefited them, they all said but still supported it. When I asked why, the answer was always "because it helps people." My follow-up question was "do you know anyone who it has helped?" Every one of them said that they didn't know a single person that was being helped.
It all boils down to the fact that we must always evaluate what we see, feel, and hear with our own senses, that we should only use technology to as part of our checks/balances.
