Silks are my first circus love but I also love getting my dance on the hoop, trapeze or anything dangling (safely) from a ceiling.
I think Circus was such a great match for the type of artist I am because while I have a lot of energy and a busy brain I get to focus all of that into a really technical skill that requires full presence and commitment or... well you could have a bad spill.
Being hyper present, focused and aware all while being suspended in the air (cute rhyme eh?)
I have never struggled seriously with anxiety but I have a lot of students who do and they say they find peace in circus because they become so focused on the action they are doing and aren't capable of thinking of anything else. Plus they are getting the physical fix and burning off any negative thoughts or feelings. I have loved watching how circus has helped my students and myself beyond just the physical. Developing trust in yourself, respect for your body, building confidence all while being creative and getting strong.
A lot of people these days go to a regular fitness gym and zone out with music or pod casts and that's not always a bad thing, but it is important to practice working WITH your body. Mind body connection can seem just like a buzz word these days but it is a real practice that can help you get the most out of each moment, not just every work out.
This is a little improv jam I did before teaching last night! Sharing them on @dtube is actually helping re ignite my training process and helping me think of creative ideas I want to bring to my conditioning and training and share with all of you. Like my last video I put some music on after because it was another noisy gym night (so many circus Ninja's in there on Tuesdays!) I'm hoping to share some videos of me fully jamming out and running some acts I have...stay tuned friends.
If any of this is interesting to you- you should try googling circus schools in your area! It's a really fun alternate way to work out and try something new. You don't have to have any experience.... remember make moves not excuses
