If you hear the word Battle Royale what do you think? Most certainly think that the Unknown Battleground Player game is commonly called PUBG. PUBG is the best-selling game of all time and always ranks first on Steam through the DoTA2 game. PUBG only takes less than a year to achieve this phenomenal, even though this PUBG is not a free game, each player must pay 200 thousand rupiah to play it. Because of this, according to analysts in 2017 PUBG received revenues of 9.5 trillion rupiah in just 8 months and in 2018 it was predicted that the figure would increase more dramatically. But you have to know that PUBG is not the first game of the Battle Royale genre, but PUBG is what makes the famous Battle Royale genre.
Battle Royale is a game where you are deployed in a map containing 100 players and are required to kill each other into the last one standing aka the last surviving player. After parachuting with parachutes, you have to look for equipment such as weapons, bulletproof clothes, and healing drugs. Every time you can meet the enemy and that's where you have to kill each other to survive. This game can be played on a team or solo basis.
History of Battle Royale Games (PUBG, Fortnite, Free Fire, Rules of Survival, etc.)
The origin of the Battle Royale game is believed to be inspired by the Japanese novel entitled Battle Royale, written in 1996 and released in 1999. The novel was also used as a manga and film which was released in 2000 and achieved tremendous success. Tells about 40 students who were sent to an island for three days to kill each other with the aim of survival. Only one person can survive. Each student is provided with water, medicine, maps, compasses and random weapons. In addition to this Battle Royale novel, the Hunger Games novel published in 2008 also uses the same concept. The Hunger Games is also a famous Hollywood film starring Jennifer Lawrence.
History of Battle Royale Games (PUBG, Fortnite, Free Fire, Rules of Survival, etc.)
The first Battle Royale game was actually a mod of the DayZ game entitled Survivor Game Z which was released in 2013. The concept follows The Hunger Games where a group of players appears to make a circle and in the middle there are bags, food, and weapons and players scramble to each other.
Brendan Greene with the nickname Unknown Player from Ireland saw this mod and was interested in his idea. Then he made a mod in the Arma 2 game with the name DayZ Cherno and then after the Arma 3 game came out Greene made a mod called Player unknown Battle Royale. Greene also made another mod called Iron Front Battle Royale in the setting of World War 2.
After the Arma 3 mod, Greene aka the Unknown Player licensed Player unknown Battle Royale to the Daybreak game company and created a stand alone game called the H1Z1: King of The Kill which was released in January 2015. This was the first Battle Royale game and achieved success. After that Greene received an email from producer Chang Han Kim from the Blue Hole Studio game company from South Korea who invited him to work together to make the Unknown Battleground Player aka PUBG, Greene ambitious to create the real Battle Royale game in the PUBG game and finally the game entered the early access stage , beta version starts from March 2017 and reaches the full version in December 2017. The results are like you see the best-selling game of all time through the game Minecraft.
History of Battle Royale Games (PUBG, Fortnite, Free Fire, Rules of Survival, etc.)
Uniquely Brendan Greene originally did not think of becoming a full time game designer, he was actually a photographer and graphic designer. Greene also played the game Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed and Greene said that he didn't like the game. That's what made him want to make the game he liked. The key to the success of the Battle Royale genre, especially the PUBG game, is that you often don't know where the enemy is, won't know what will happen, every time you play you will get different stories and experiences. That's an interesting side that other genres don't have.
History of Battle Royale Games (PUBG, Fortnite, Free Fire, Rules of Survival, etc.)
The popularity of PUBG clearly makes other game developers interested in making games of the same genre. Epic Games tried to make a Battle Royale game called Fortnite inspired by PUBG. Unlike the paid PUBG, Fortnite is free. It is an Epic games strategy to compete with PUBG. As a result Fortnite managed to get 40 million players, an incredible number. But Chang Han Kim producer from PUBG Blue Holes studio spoke up, Epic Games never talked about it with us, we feel this is not true, but Epic Games itself says that Fortnite is different from PUBG and has its own characteristics.
The success of PUBG and Fortnite on PC clearly quickly made mobile game developers adapt the Battle Royale game to smartphone devices. Trendsetter will always be followed by followers. Developers from China Net Ease even made 3 Battle Royale game applications, namely Rules of Survival, Knives Out, and Survival Royale. Although the last two titles are actually the same game, only different servers. In Indonesia, the game Rules of Survival and Free Fire Battleground were arguably successful hits and many played. Of course everything is free, aka free to play.
History of Battle Royale Games (PUBG, Fortnite, Free Fire, Rules of Survival, etc.)
Brendan Greene himself as the creator of the PUBG game said that all developers inspired by PUBG should not only copy PUBG but must have their own uniqueness.
In 2018, more and more Battle Royale games will enter the PC, console and smartphone. One of them is Tencent developer who has prepared two PUBG Mobile games and the Ring of Elysium (EUROPA) to follow the trend of the Battle Royale genre.
