Grandparents Day

It is that time of the year again when the Pre school children and Junior School Children present little concerts for Grandparents or Fathers Day, depending on the school.

I had the pleasure of attending a Grandparents Day morning at one of my grandsons schools'. It is a delightful experience as every grandparent is so proud of their grandchild and the children scan the audience looking for their beloved grandma or grandpa.

I was sitting with a group of strangers and it amused me how we all had to show the group which child belonged to us, and it has always amazed me that irrespective of how many children are on stage,I only have eyes for my little one. They are so precious and once they spot their grandparent, for a moment they forget why they are on stage, and little hands wave like crazy.

The children were given the opportunity to say what was so special to them about their granny or granddad and much to the amusement of the audience, the majority of the children said that their granny baked delicious cakes and made the best food. Another general comment was that it was fine to have biscuits and milk at Grans house for breakfast.

Granddads were hailed as the best football coaches, the best fishermen, the greatest jokers and a good pal.

I am not sure if Grandparents realize the important role that they play in the lives of their grandchildren. Children need to explore their environment and who better to have at their side than a slow old lady or man, who is only too happy to let the little one investigate under rocks and leaves. We have time to read to the children and teach them to bake, to sew and so all the little crafts that busy parents just do not have time to teach.

If you are a Grandparent, you will know exactly where I am coming from, if not, then some of the best years await you. The love for a grandchild is an instant connection with this new member of the family tree and as protective as I feel over my own children, I am more fiercely protective over these little ones of the new generation.

I am extremely blessed to have 14 grandchildren ranging in ages 2yr to 22yrs, and everyone of them has a special piece of my heart.

14!!! Yes I would say you are blessed!

wow, you are blessed. I can't wait to have these special experiences. So sweet, I can just picture the setting. :)

If I can give you any advice keep a journal of all the funny little experiences that you have with your little one. My teenage grandkids love me to tell them stories about themselves, the funny little things that they got up to and just the experiences that I had with them as infants and youngsters. They never tire of hearing about themselves. Also when they start talking and the funny pronunciations of words. Makes for good conversations with them. Blessings to you and your family
