I shot some awesome pics of the lunar eclipse last night

It was raining & cloudy when I woke at 4am but an hour later there was a break in the clouds as we approached the total eclipse. I shot around 300 pictures during a 30min period before the moon passed back behind the clouds and I started getting wet!

I understand it was cloudy for most people around the world hoping to catch this rare moment, which is the only total eclipse of the moon this year.

Assuming the round earth model, what I witnessed last night was the shadow of the earth passing across the face of the moon.

The pictures

Shot on a tripod with Canon 5Dmkii & 300mm Tamron zoom lens.

Here you can see the far right of the moon is still illuminated by the sun.

Just ten minutes later the light has faded from the right, revealing the red coloured moon, created by the refracted light of the sun as it shines through the earth's atmosphere.

Some passing clouds obstruct the view momentarily, but the effect is lovely.

Unmistakably red now, the moon appears to glow stronger as the bright side fades.

Finally the clouds return and the moon fades from view, never to return.

I could see it behind the clouds for fleeting moments up until 7am but it wasn't worth photographing. What we see after the total eclipse is the reverse pattern, so the light of the sun will appear on the opposite side, gradually growing in size, returning to the familiar cirle of the white/blue full moon.

Why super blood wolf?

A supermoon means it is at its closest point to earth in its orbit.

A bloodmoon is used to describe the red colour, created by diffusion of light from the rim of the earth.

A wolfmoon simply means it is a full moon in the first month of the year.

While we could just call it a total eclipse of the moon, these words alone would not signify what a rare and special event it was.

Enhanced VISION: an unexpected side-effect

After staring at the moon constantly for 30mins I came back inside and my daughter Luna woke up and came to find me in my office for a hug. She has always slept badly during the full and new moon periods. On this occasion she quickly fell asleep in my arms and I moved into the living room where I sat underneath a window in a very dark room, waiting for the clouds to clear.

After a few minutes I felt as if I was not alone in there and could see a blue & pink pulsating light which seemed to be moving around the room. It was even visible when I closed my eyes and it startled me a little when the light suddenly immersed us completely. I was able to relax a little and felt then as if I was looking at an aura. Perhaps Luna's aura? It appeared to breathe in and out of my chest area where Luna was sleeping. I became quite emotional watching it and a few tears rolled down my cheeks. It felt like something special was happening. After a few minutes it was gone and no matter how hard I tried I could no longer see it.

I've never seen anything like this before and would be interested to try recreating the circumstances which led to this kind of enhanced vision. But will it work without the super blood wolf moon??? We will see...

What an awesome special existence we have been blessed with here. Moments like this remind me how much more we still have to learn about the non physical aspects of our lives.
