The Eclipse is all over the internet, the news, and social media. Everywhere you look, in any format you choose, there is something Eclipse related there. It has become such a huge event that the very word Eclipse is now being capitalized in every publication. Let me pose a question though; has the eclipse been eclipsed by the Eclipse? There so much hype and drama surrounding it that it has almost lost it's luster. This once or twice in a lifetime event has become so sensationalized, that many people who would take a casual interest in science are totally turned off by it now. Some have even chosen to take advantage of the people who are interested in it still, by selling them paper sunglasses, instead of actual vision protection. I live in Western Kentucky where we will have one of the longest periods of totality. We will experience approximately 2m 21s of total eclipse. I was just 8 years old during the last eclipse. I don't even remember it.
I would encourage anyone who is in the band of the eclipse to make a few minutes in their day to check it out. It IS a big deal and you will remember for years to come if you slow down a take a moment to pay attention. To see it get dark in the middle of the afternoon. To feel the temperature drop as much as 20F in minutes. How cool is that?! Don't let the hype dissuade you from experiencing this awesome event. Yeah, I'm tired of hearing about it too. But ignore the hype and just take advantage of the rare opportunity you have. It will happen again in the U.S. in 2024, but then you have to wait until 2045 for the next one.
