US pension plans are Ponzi schemes that require ever more people to join in order to pay for those cashing out. Many states and counties across America are staring down the barrel of a $200,000,000,000,000 (200 Trillion) pension deficit.
The problem is everyone is acting rationally - It is the system that is irrational. It rewards bad behaviour that WILL destroy our society and civilisation if those that depend most upon it do not seek alternatives. Single mothers and the elderly can do something about this. But will they?
