It is the dream of every startup to have a name that is cool and can qualify as a household name. Names of giant businesses like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and a host of others readily come to mind
But many startup entrepreneurs fail to realise the dream of having the best names by making one or more of the mistakes highlighted below
- Choosing a name that's restricts expansion: This tip was emphasized in Richard Branson's Like a Virgin. Branson gave an example of what a disaster it would be to name Amazon online bookstore or Bezos book store.
To this end, any name you pick for your business should be:
a. Short: Most preferably not more than 3 syllables: Goo-gle, A-ma-zon,
b. Brandable: Virgin have gone to be the anchor of 400 businesses as Branson claims: Virgin Money, Virgin Media, Virgin Airlines e.t.c
Using your name as the startup's name: Well, that sounds egoistic except you're running a restaurant or food franchise.
A name that doesn't stick: Well if Flickr could get away with it; your chances of getting away with it may not be too robust. In coining a new word for your brand. You must ask yourself:
Does it stick?
Is it easy to pronounce?
Does it hold an underlying meaning?
I hope you name your #startup something the Merriam Webster dictionary will like to index.
