I'm not an economist, but I am a student of history. I think most people take a very short view of circumstances. They think what is will always be. They don't see how across the globe and through history many of the policies the US follows now (high debt, dependence on foreign entities to maintain our standard of living, over-extended global presence -- that is a very expensive military) have presaged the decline of other economies/nations.
It would really be good if history, proper history, were taught in schools so people could take a long view and be more skeptical of leaders' shallow promises.
