There's a particular absurdity that comes with decrying capitalism and private businesses as the culprits behind crony capitalism and collusion with the state.
The state has everything to gain and nothing to lose by playing the game. Even supposed opponents of collusion between the state and corporations seem to cave when the state starts to subsidize something that they like. The state could and should just say "no" whenever a business comes looking for subsidies and handouts.
On the other side, it only takes one deal with the government with one company to infect an entire industry. The second the state says "yes" to a subsidy or a handout for one company, every ethical company that never wanted a subsidy or a handout needs to accept them or go out of business due to the incursion in the free market.
The lack of business ethics, in this regard, should be placed squarely on the government because it forces otherwise good people to compromise their values in order to remain sustainable and keep their people employed.
