NVC Journal: Reflections on the Need for Connection

They say that things come to you exactly when you need them. I finished last year by completing an abundance challenge, a challenge that really helped me take time for myself and make space for more abundance to flow into my life.

And now, now I enter this year with the opportunity to take part in a Non Violent Communication Workshop, led by @eco-alex. This is something that will help my relationship with my daughters grow and also help me in communicating with their father. As well as giving me the tools to develop my communication skills, which will benefit all of my relationships.

As part of the workshop, we have been asked to answer the following questions:

  • Describe a moment that you felt deeply connected to another person.
  • Where were you, and who were you with?
  • What were you doing? What was the other person doing?
  • What words, if any, did you express and/or hear the other person say?
  • What qualities did you experience that let you know you were connecting? Be as specific and detailed as you can be.

Connection

Sometimes when we see someone, even without talking to them we feel a connection. This happen with my friend Colette, I remember the first time I saw her. I was taking part in a weekly singing group and she arrived with her partner, womb in bloom. She was positively glowing and she had a Shelia Na Gig tattoo on her wrist which called out to me.

But this is not the moment I wish to share. I was present at the birth of her son. She had asked me to be her doula and I felt so honoured to be asked. We had become friends quickly and it felt like a natural progression of our friendship.

I, along with her partner and midwife had been with her for 48 hours. Towards the end, she was kneeling on all fours in the process of birthing her son. I was holding her hands and she was looking into my eyes. I held her gaze, pouring love from my eyes into hers. We were physically very close to one another.

She was looking at me for reassurance, at times she looked overwhelmed and so vulnerable, but yet she exuded so much power. In this moment of transition she doubted herself, as all women do. I just kept saying to her

You are doing this, you are doing this.

Time seemed to stand still as we got lost in one another's eyes. I felt so much respect and love for this warrior mama. So blessed to witness her power, as she birthed her baby boy. So blessed to share this moment with her, to hold space for her, in this so sacred of acts.

I could see the love in her eyes and the fire that burned within her, her inner strength shining through.

I have never felt a connection like this before. To share such an intimate moment with someone, to be there for them as they transition into motherhood. We created such a strong bond because of that. There were no words that needed to be spoken, we both felt that connection so strongly.

A few days ago I found a card that she had given me not long after, thanking me for supporting her and for the strength I gave her through my eyes. And then yesterday I saw the post by @eco-alex offering this workshop and this amazing experience was the first thing that came to my mind.

Just writing about it makes me feel so much love and respect for her. Even though she is no longer on this physical plane, I still feel that connection so strongly.

Thank you @eco-alex for giving me the opportunity to remember and share this memory.

Beautiful. What an amazing thing it is to witness a birth and connect in this way. Thinking of my own response....

Wooosh! I'm nearly out of words here. A situation I can not imagine even though I became father twice already. Thank you for sharing! Love!

I love this! I've watched many of Marshall Rosenbergs videos and have the book. It truly has helped me in my life. I do need to brush up from time to time and now is about that time. It's been a while since I refreshed. Good stuff! Enjoy the workshop!!

How lovely. And what a strong memory! Sure it's one of those that momentarily gets lost, but you'll never forget it. Funny, I wrote about birth too 😁.
