The expert said, orange peel contains important components such as polymethosxylated flavones (PMFs) and d-limonene which are useful for activating detoxification in the liver, reducing bad cholesterol (LDL), and maintaining blood sugar balance. Well, those three things are very related to heart health.

Many Chinese dishes use orange peels to be served with red meat. The reason is orange peel can help digest fatty foods. Here's how to plant an orange tree

  1. Growing Conditions

Orange plants will grow well at an altitude of 0-400 M asl, with climate temperatures of 25ºC - 30ºC or an average of 20ºC, and rainfall no more than 100 mm or 1200 mm per month, and air humidity 50% - 85% with a minimum 3 months dry.

Planting must be in an open area or a place that gets enough sunlight, planting in the highlands makes the fruit skin thick and the taste is not sweet.

Good soil for planting oranges is loose soil and high in organic matter. In addition there must also be irrigation and drainage with acidity (pH) 6-7.

  1. Choosing Location

The first thing you must do is to choose the best location, which is a location that has warm weather, sufficient sunlight, and faces south or west.

The height of a land also has an important role, some varieties want different land heights.

For example, the cultivation of lime is good at altitudes between 700-1,200. As for large oranges in Bali and Madiun, it would be good to plant them at an altitude of 1-700 M asl.

Also consider the rainfall factor at the planting site, although each variety requires different rainfall but the benchmark is around 5-9 months of the rainy season.

Choose land that is not covered by trees so that sunlight reaches the plants well. Planting oranges will be better if planting is done on paddy fields or tegal that are not blocked by other trees.

As for good planting media, the type of andosol or latosol soil (sandy loam soil which is rich in humus content).

If the soil is too acidic, dolomite lime should be used to neutralize the pH of the soil, a good pH for growing oranges between 5-6.

  1. Determine the Type of Tree

Tips for choosing good orange seeds:

  • Choosing the type of orange tree you want to plant, you can choose (sweet orange, lime, grapefruit, and so on.
  • Note that the seeds are protected from all types of diseases or plant pests
  • Choose seeds that have a 95% similarity level to the parent
  • See the growth of the leaves begin to dense or not, strong stems or not, or shake when removed
  • Having a lot of root fibers, if the taproot look for with a medium size
  • A safer way is to buy seeds that already have certificates of seed breeding
  • Ask the seller of seeds about the right climate for planting certain types.
  • Look for information about the knowledge of when the types of oranges that you plant bear fruit.

In addition to determining superior seeds, selecting seeds with varieties that are in accordance with market demand also need attention. And most importantly, choose a type of orange with a stable price that is also in demand by many markets.

How to Plant an Orange Tree

If you already have superior seeds, the next step is to plant, in this way:

  • Plant that well when it will fall (at the beginning) the rainy season around (October - December)

  • Make a planting hole with an ideal size of 30 x 30 cm

  • Pay attention to the distance of plants, the good one is 5 x 5 cm

  • Previously planted seedlings first give manure up to 1/4 of the hole, add approximately 1 handheld NPK fertilizer, stir together with manure that has been mixed with the soil

  • After that, place the seeds in an upright position

  • Throw the soil and put pressure on each corner until the seeds do not waver

  • Watering is done when the soil dries

  • Finally, always control your plants regularly

Orange nurseries can also be obtained from the seeds or commonly called generative methods. Follow how:

  • Cut the oranges and squeeze the seeds

  • Leave the seeds in an open container and place them in a location that is not exposed to direct sunlight for 3 days until the mucus in the seeds dries

  • While waiting for time, you can prepare the seeding area by cultivating 30 cm deep soil and make a 1m x 1m plot

  • Add manure to increase the fertility of the nursery area

  • After that, plant seeds into the nursery area with a distance of 2 cm, then cover again with soil and flush with enough water

  • At the top give shelter or shade roof to avoid the orange seeds from direct sunlight

  • At 3-5 months of age a

In one day at least 5 hours in the sun and don't forget to water it.

Watering and Fertilizing

For fertilizing, NPK can be used routinely every 4 months at a dose of 25 grams per one tabulompat (Fruit Plant in Pot).

As we get older, fertilizer doses must also be increased to 50 grams per plant, to 100, and so on.

Pruning

Pruning is done so that each plant does not fight each other offended, but also aims to make plants look more neat and beautiful.

If there is one branch affected by the disease, then immediately cut the branch.

Pruning of branches is done by a system of 1-3-9 plus 3 tertiary branches from each secondary branch. Primary branches are spaced out, a minimum of 10 cm between branches.

And primary, secondary, and tertiary branches are cut approximately 30-40 cm long from the base of the branch.

Always Check Leaf Health

One of the causes of leaf damage is aphids, these small pests have the main characteristic black, live in groups, and usually attack the shoots of young leaves.

While the characteristics of plants affected by lice are seen in the leaves curled, not only that the fleas are also able to remove sweet liquid.

So as a result of that ants will come to eat each other plant leaves. What's worse is if the lice attack the flower, it could be a failure to harvest.

If the lice attack the branches, then immediately cut the branch and to make it safer, burn the branches. It can also provide insecticides in the form of disinfectants such as Curacon 500EC or Desic 2,5EC.

Can also use insecticides made from organic, which is a concern when spraying insecticides is (do not get exposed to the fruit).

Harvest Determination

A good harvest is done when the fruit is ripe optimally, which is marked by changing skin color. When calculated in terms of age, usually 28-36 weeks from the seeds can be harvested (depending on variety).

Picking oranges using scissors, the goal is to avoid damage to the stalk. Usually 1 orange plant is able to produce 300-400 oranges each year. In other varieties up to 500 fruits.

In Indonesia, yields are only able to produce around 5.1 tons of citrus fruits per hectare. This figure is a very large number when compared to subtropical countries that can produce 40 tons of oranges per hectare.

Post Harvest Handling

Post-harvest is an important factor that is closely related to the marketing process and the target market to be addressed. Here are things to do when harvesting.

  • Sort oranges and place them in a shady and clean location

  • Before shipping, store oranges in a room with a temperature of 8-10 ° C

  • Pack oranges well, so they look good so prices will go up automatically
