There's a countdown that's silently ticking. As the number of devices (vehicles, smartphones, tablets) are generating and consuming bandwidth the telecom infrastructure is quickly being saturated. Upon a decent penetration of self-driving vehicles, the network communications will be completely saturated with vehicles generating terabytes of data every single data.
Considering that quite a few mobile data plans are capped at several gigs, what will end up happening?
There is a push towards edge computing where vehicular clouds will form and computation moves to the data. Some say that "data has gravity".
This can make sense to move computation closer to the data, considering only the communication costs. Though as the tendency goes towards distributed systems, what will be required regarding trust and security assumptions?
