Don't Turnitin: The Case Against Plagiarism Detectors

Great and useful post! I'm currently a teaching assistant for a writing heavy course and I'm deciding how to check for plagiarism. You've convinced me not to use Turnitin, but I'm not sure I'm clear on the alternatives.

You say just use google search. Are you referring to just simply copy/pasting the students work into google and see what it spits out? Are there other risks with this?

Glad it's applicable to your classes! I'm not sure what the risks to a google search are. And yeah, the practice is just copy and pasting work. The point there is that it's stupidly easy to do and really puts all these services to shame.
