What ROBOTICS Can Teach Young Minds: The Launching of Summer Robotics Program

in education •  8 years ago

When I was young, I thought of robots as humongus creatures made of hardened steel that speak funny and move awkwardly.

In the 21st century, all those misconceptions were clarified and everyone has access to "robots" and even tinker with them.

Our Brainchild Project

We had our first Summer Robotics Camp in our school, Ekamai International School on June 2014. There were about 40 students who enrolled at the launching of the program, which we did not really expect.

A Holistic Approach

The program starts with a short "devotional" to inspire our students and afterwards singing the Thai National Anthem.  Our summer program was holistic and we try to incorporate the four dimensions of human development: physical, mental, social, and spiritual.

STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics

This is Wanchan.  She was one of the three girls who joined the ranks of boys in the race of robot development and design. She was sure exceptional!

Working together to create something is one of the values we wanted to inculcate to the students.

They not only learn the science and technology aspect of the program, they also had activities in engineering and design.

I believe they enjoyed every minute of the program.

A Special Room was prepared for the program where they can move freely and let their robots run wild!

Robotics Kits were provided that come with a booklet for them to initially follow instructions then later on design their own robots.

After their design, they present to us their work and depending on how good and creative their design, each one got a prize for doing well.

Here's Yubin, the boy whom we never expected to win the Grand Prize for Best Design. A remarkable kid.

They were also taught the concept of programming using CODE School modules.

And for Science, we taught them the concept of Aquaponics.

It was a very remarkable Summer program with remarkable kids. To this day, this program is one of the most-attended Summer program in our school.  Too bad, I won't be there to take part anymore.

Very interesting. Do you have regular classes or only summer school?

For now it's only during summer. I was proposing to get this into our "after-school" program. Hopefully the school administration will consider it. Thanks for dropping by!

Keep up the great work @cjclaro
