WordWednesday - Public Education or Government Schooling?

in education •  7 years ago

How many of us say "public education" when we talk about so called free government school? Do we think about what that means? I think it matters because if we break it down, we might be better able to understand what it truly is we are talking about and we can also communicate better with others on this important topic.

First of all, it is anything but public. Don't think you can just waltz into the building and expect some sort of service. This is a government run institution, not a public building.

Parents are supposed to be involved with student success, but they barely have a voice in curriculum. The entire management is hierarchical starting with state and federal representatives (you know they know better) and down the chain it goes until it finally falls upon the student to follow or fail. There will be no input from the lowly students.

Secondly, it is pretty hard to argue that what people get at these day prisons is education. Do you remember any of the dates or names you had to memorize for history? What about algebra - can you balance an equation today?

Here are some good questions:

  • What do you remember about learning any critical thinking skills?
  • Did you learn about money - like what even is money, fractional reserve banking, what a mortgage is, or how to budget?

Yes, I am hard on government schools. I have come to believe they are a very destructive force in which the vast majority of the populace believes is at worst a necessary evil, but mostly a well meaning and productive pillar of society.

If we can overcome this very huge hurdle, I think we will be on the path to peace and prosperity. We need to have this discussion.
