Growing Number Of Families Opt For Homeschooling Over Safety Concerns

in education •  7 years ago

Homeschooling organizations say that they've seen a dramatic rise in interest lately, with a growing number of parents who have safety concerns for their children.

Homeschooling groups are getting thousands of e-mails and calls every month, groups like the Texas Home School Coalition, from parents who are eager to ask questions about the possibility of exploring homeschooling for their own family.

Some parents have been specifically mentioning their worries about school shootings and this is believed to be fueling a rise in interest for alternative schooling options for families around the country.

Aside from common worries such as exposure to drugs or gangs, bullying, and other concerns, parents are also now worried about their children being involved in a shooting. In some states it's suggested that homeschooling is growing at a faster rate than private school enrollment, for areas such as North Carolina. And it's clear that there is a shift in how many people view homeschooling today.

Thanks to technology, homeschooling has become more accessible than ever before. And some of those who are familiar with the homeschooling process have insisted that anybody can do it if they're dedicated enough to the cause.

The tired myth about home-schooled children being improperly socialized or underachievers just isn't true.

Homeschooling brings with it many benefits for the family and there are some parents who have suggested that they might prefer this method of schooling for their children, but they don't see it being a feasible option for them because of money or work etc. However, there are families from all sorts of different economic backgrounds, a myriad of sizes, following various political and religious beliefs etc, who've managed to be able to make homeschooling work for them. It isn't an education method that's only suitable for one demographic.

For some families who've been eager to try and see if homeschooling might work for them, it's brought about the growing trend of hybrid homeschooling. With this model, the children engage in both a home-school learning environment as well as a traditional school setting. However, this private school setting isn't classified as a traditional school like many of us are familiar with. But there are many families who are showing an interest in blending the two together.

Some parents say that they wouldn't choose homeschooling because they fear that they don't know enough to be able to teach their children. But that too shouldn't stop them, because quite often home-schooled children will surpass the academic achievements of their parents. Not only that, but parents also have the option to outsource the learning to someone else who has specialized knowledge about that subject. They could also purpose to learn about the subject with their child at the same time. Just because they might not be well-versed in a specific topic, shouldn't be reason enough to refuse to consider homeschooling as a viable education option for their family.

At the moment it's estimated that there are millions of children being home-schooled in the U.S. And homeschooling isn't only growing rapidly in the U.S., it's also suggested to be seeing significant growth in places like Canada, the UK, and elsewhere. Not everyone has the freedom to choose this option for their family however, as homeschooling is illegal in a variety of places today like Brazil, Cuba, Turkey, and Greece.

This is so important! I'm very glad to hear that there's more interest in home schooling and that parents are concerned about their children's safety.

I was home schooled and now my wife and I are educating our own children. It's not always easy, but it is definitely worth doing.

We will be homeschooling our kids!

I dislike having to pay taxes so that everyone's children can go to public school. I would rather see everyone home schooling their own children, on their own dime. Not mine.

If I could go back and do it again, I would have homeschooled. I'm glad the trend is changing.

I must admit that this news took me by surprise did not know that the children took classes in their homes, I knew of the children with different capacity. In Argentina this method of teaching for regular students does not exist, if there are surely many families would merge with this system due to the growing wave of insecurity.
thank you very much dear friend @doitvoluntarily for sharing this great news
I wish you a beautiful night

Yeah... I'd prefer homeschooling

  • the rampant shooting stories are very worrisome and parents can't be relaxed knowing that schools have also turnes wild west.
  • from my point of view, schooling is not compulsory. This is my reason
I think school numbs you of ideas and creativity.
In a school setting, not everyone in the classroom thinks the same or learns at the class teacher's pace. We all have our best hidden in us only to be understood gradually.
    There's a lot anyway
    Good morning

I have always thought about it , and still do . I’m not sure if I want my son to be in an environment where there is always danger and I’m not sure how I feel after so many shooting . This is what’s happening now , what about when he goes to school in 3 years ? I love my son and I don’t want him to “risk” his life

I think homeschooling is a great idea especially now, these days where there are so many school shootings etc.
Plus when I was homeschooling my kids for 4 months while we went to El Salvador, the teachers could not believe how much the boys improved in their school when we came back.
This was when they were in grade 2 and 4, so it was pretty easy for me to teach or show them but I didn't think I could do that when they would hit high school level, but I guess that problem is solved too with all this new and improved technology and homeschooling system where there are other options if you need some help.

Thank you so much for sharing this great news. I knew that more and more people were homeschooling in Canada but didn't really know that this is also getting very, very popular in the US.

I have just put up a text on radically home oriented community, @doitvoluntarily, that could be in a way an extension of your story. There is a growing community that wants to separate from the alienated State.

I was home schooled back when it was considered some what in its infancy. I enjoyed it. It's nothing new. People have been institutionalized to believe the state is the best source of education. It's not. For most of human history, the state hasn't been the primary educator of children. It's been parents, religious organizations, and other private organizations.

It seems radical to some because of how ingrained it is worldwide now to have the state educate children. I'm less concerned about gun violence — the media is blowing it way out of proportion. There are far more dangerous things in school than isolated mass shooters (mass media coverage makes horrible instances seem like a common occurrence).

The ideas being shoved down our children's throats should be what scare people. It was thought parents were being tinfoil hat conspiracy theorists by calling schools centers of indoctrination, but the evidence holds true. The schools teach a narrow view of government, life, religion, etc. all approved by the state to be "neutral" when neutrality itself is a myth.

I agree with homeschooling from a philosophical point but it opens the doors to all kinds of religious indoctrination which I don't agree with.
I live in germany were it's illegal to homeschool - which I don't agree with either but I think there need to be regulations for the content teached at home.

the biggest religion in the world is statism✌

This was great that all children received education in their homes, it should not be facial for a father to always be in one single surplus. but I also think that children have to go out and share see other face and relate to all people

It would not be bad, and I understand the parents' concern about wanting to protect their children from gunfights and drugs
but I feel that the child has to interact with other children to see the day to day, it can not be that they are always at home avoiding any disaster
tremendous article friend thanks for sharing

Yup.

I'm not surprised. Where I live we haven't had any threats or instances of violence at schools. With all the media coverage, people are afraid and harassing our schools to make schools safer from school shooters. Because they are enforcing new rules, putting up cameras and other security technology, and requiring kids to have transparent bags, it's natural these things are scaring parents even more because they think it's going to happen eventually. Even I'm worried about sending my kid to school when she's old enough. I don't want her to be monitored by big brother and lacking privacy with see thru bags. At this time homeschool seems attractive.

This is such a key message. The necessity of getting kids back with their families and away from dominators and manipulators is self-evident. Thank you for doing this work.

Hey, I think this decision of the parents that their children receive an education in their homes seems fabulous
I understand the concern of parents should not be easy
I currently have a nephew receiving classes at home. I think this is fabulous.
