The Olympic Games were named after the town Olympic in Greece. In the ancients days, the Greeks were divided into many groups and used to fight one another of the time. A man named Iphitos became very much anxious at this and hit upon a plan to promote friendship among the Greeks. He invited the best athletes from the nearby cities to the valley of Olympia to take part in different athletic contests.
His plan worked well. The games continued till 394 AD before the Roman emperor stopped it. Towards the end of the 19th century, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a Frenchman, revived the game with the purpose to strengthen the bond of friendship among the nation of the world. For this, he is called the father of the modern Olympic games. According to his proposal, the Olympic games are held after every four years in some region of the world.
