An advocate becomes successful when people, not a person works with it. For a broom fiber is weak when it is alone but when it is binded with more fibers it becomes strong.

An educator doesn’t only teach theories. They develop a person holistically. A student should go out of the school equipped with Knowledge, Skills and the right Attitude (KSA). As an educator you imbed attitude formation into your lessons either through examples or actual performance. This attitude formation however doesn’t necessarily needs to be developed inside the classrooms and be bounded with the lessons. They can be formed and/or applied with other schools outside endeavor.

Schools just like any other corporation are also active on their social responsibility towards their neighboring community. They can adopt barangays or partner with local government units for a certain advocate. Whatever it is this is where students can further develop and/or formed their attitude and grow as a person. This is where their humanitarian and volunteerism act can be applied.

Just like the university I am working with, it is very much involve with our community extension activities. The department that handles such activities is what we call as COMMUNITY AWARENESS, RELATIONS AND EXTENSION SERVICES, in short for CARES. The Director of the department is very active himself of assisting and overseeing the different programs spearheaded by the different department's identified COORDINATOR of the university.

How to be a coordinator?

  1. The Dean/Principal of the department will appoint a teacher to the CARES Director. However the teacher will be asked if he/she is willing to take the post. A check on the teachers dedication and volunteerism to spearhead the departments program is a must.
  2. The appointment will then be submitted to higher administration for approval.
  3. Upon approval you will be given the appointment certificate that would state the effectivity of your 1 year coordinator ship.

This year however, they change the length of the appointment. From the usual 1 year they extend it to 2 years for sustainability of the program. This would mean the coordinator will now have enough time to further stabilize and strengthen the program of their department.

I am not new to being a CARES coordinator. I was once the coordinator of a certain college for two (2) years and then with Senior High School this is my 2nd year already. That would mean I will be extending for another year due to the new policy of the 2 years length.

The Programs I was referring to above are :

  • Livelihood Program of the College of Hospitality Management
  • Greening Program of the College of Customs Administration
  • Computer Tutorials of the College of Computer Studies
  • Solid Waste Management of the College of Maritime Education
  • Playgroup Tutorials of the College of Teacher Education
  • Ecobrick Program of the Senior High School Department

…this is just to name a few of all the other programs of the other colleges.

With all the mentioned program above and with the rest of the other colleges and even administrative offices of the university it is necessary to plan out a school years schedule of activities.

Thus, last May 18, 2018 all the Coordinators of the different colleges and department was required to attend the STRATEGIC PLANNING : EVALUATION AND CREATION OF THE ANNUAL PLAN. Which was held at the universities mini restaurant that lasted 7 hours.

My on-going edit of the new annual plan...

On my first two months of the annual plan, I had stated already to spread awareness of the departments existing community extension programs. This is when students who are willing to do volunteer work registers to be part of the different activities layed-out for the entire school year. Students will then be distributed for the monthly pre-identified activities. Giving them the chance to work with other volunteers, students and teachers alike. They will also get the chance to go out of the campus and mingle with the barangay residents. The annual plan is also made sure to create activities that will allow students to do their volunteering activity partly at the barangay. They can :
  • go join the coastal clean-up drive
  • join in the festivities of the barangay for a show to showcase different talents
  • do research work to determine problems which could lead to a new program
  • gift giving activity
  • feeding program
  • making eco-bricks
  • building furnitures and fixtures at the barangay hall, day care center through the use of eco-bricks

.....and so much more. Through this the student volunteer would be able to grow his passion to help others and be a humanitarian warrior. Student would also learn patience, team work, communication skills, dedication, love of others and discover more of themselves. They will develop self confidence and self worth.

Volunteerism teaches a person a whole lot of things about life that sometimes could not be personified inside the classroom. - @mcamayra
