Making History: Woman with Down Syndrome Becomes Teacher

in education •  8 years ago  (edited)

When Noelia Garella became a licensed nursery teacher in Argentina, she broke many barriers. Born with Down Syndrome in 1985, she faced prejudice even as a youngster. A day care's director barred her from enrolling calling her a "monster."

The discrimination didn't undermine her unflappable optimism, openness and love of children. She pushed to become Latin America's first licensed nursery teacher. The hardliners opposed on the basis of her condition alone, concerned about whether the pupils will accept her. Once they observed her in person, they realized that she was a natural. The children gravitated toward her affection for them.

Congratulations Garella and thank you for challenging prejudice and inspiring the rest of us!

Those kids are so fortunate. She probably has greater understanding than a lot of teachers.
