View this post on Hive: Why I'm quitting teaching part 7/11: I no longer wish to perpetuate the dual processes of Individualisation and Responsibilisation
I've moved to Hive, along with most other people, following Justin Sun's takeover of Steem in the Spring of 2020. I believe hive is a lot more decentralised than Steem!
Hate to see good teachers stop but I think I understand what you are getting at. Here's my take.
I feel that in the west our education systems reflect our economic system. In the west we suffer under capitalism. Which is as a competitive as systems come. Since Capitalism is a win - lose proposition so is our education system.
Finland's education system is always rated at the top in the world but is based on cooperation rather than competition. Not only are they better educated but the whole country is much happier.
Just as a side note I quit teaching in the schools back in the 90's out of frustration with administrations and opened my own music school which has been running for the past 25 yrs so I understand your angst.

It is an argument that's hard to resist - that capitalism has long ruined our education system.....
I'm planning on doing online tuition, on top of what I already earn on my main WordPress blog and resource sales I might even earn more than I do as a teacher.

What a brave move to make. This must have been a long-thought decision. I can't agree more with the sentiments in this post and it seems that this could be applied to many industries that have been processed through the big green money machine. I despair at the thought of what my daughter is going to have to deal with. She is about to start comprehensive school and it is just going to suck the life out of her. I try so hard to open her horizons but peer pressure is conditioned into them and it is tough to be a parent these days. So many traps for them and you point about them being put against each other is spot on. To have this system you have to have folk at the bottom so the folk in the middle have something to be afraid of. Those at the top have nothing to worry about as privilege will always see them to security in life. The whole society need to press the reset button if you ask me. Too much rot in the system to ignore it.
Anyway, this was supposed to be an "hello" msg after seeing you were on the list of folk who are attending the Birmingham event. I am also attending and wanted to say hello to all those on the list so far. Lol, your post really pushed my buttons so it looks like this has been a worthwhile task :) See you on the 7th!

Thanks for the thoughful reply!
I wouldnt worry about it too much - kids have a tendancy to turn out all right in the end despite everything.
Look forward to meeting you on the 7th!

I remember seeing many a footnote on my yearly reviews - No tick-boxes with a predicted result for that one. :)
Background plays a part for sure, but if your homelife is settled, it doesn't matter which street you are walking home to.
I grew up on a council estate, single parent, shared a room, and we didn't have carpets or any other heating than a coal fire for a while. Still, it was base, we were fed, clothed, and I count myself lucky for that - oh and a top mother helps!
It is a shame to lose good teachers, but if it's not what you want any more then best to find some joy elsewhere :)

My suspicion is that qualifications should matter less and less the more complex, diverse, and 'gigified' the job market gets..... to be replaced by an evidence trail of what you've actually done with your life!
In the grander historical picture I hope we look back on the last few decades of the education system with horror.
Good to know you're working class roots too! I'm glad I grew up poor, I hardly want for anything TBH.
And yer right, I've just got to get out. Time for someone keen and fresh to take over, it's no country for old men, teaching.

Working class indeed, its good in some ways like as you say, desire for stuff isn't really there. I do like warmth though, sunlight or fires :)
So you'll be working online I read? Sounds like a better option - join the BC hippy gang :D

I have considered leaving teaching, as well. I see issues in the crazy accountability system in place. Third party testing companies control our curriculum, hiring, firing, school funding... it's insanity. I tried my hand at fighting the system but discovered there is big money controlling much of education. It's a tough situation all around. I wish you the best. Blessings.

An estimated $7 trillion - that's the value of the global education education market.
