What is a good teacher???

I’ve been a teacher for the last 12 years.

Every day is a “new” day for me.
Yesterday’s shouting, begging and pleading is exaclty where it should be..... in Yesterday!!

Today is a new day, a new day to inspire learners, listen to problems and help where help is needed.

For the past few years now, learners that came from previous grades, are less motivated, less inspired, less everything and I ask myself the same question over and over .....WHY??

Is it because the system just want learners to sit, keep quiet and listen, is it because parents are not too involved in their child’s schoolwork or teachers not in the “mood” to teach anymore?

I’ve seen in my 12 years, that if you don't “take” the childs’ attention right from the start, you’ve already lost. A learner can sit still for 10minutes, after which they start to fiddle around, bothering learners around them, ask silly questions, try to be funny. Anything, except listening to the lesson.

My learners know by now, there’s a time for work and a time to play. I also don't expect my learners to sit still like soldiers, only listening to a lesson. I want to ineract with them, make them more curious about the subject, let them think that they’ve figured something out.

Every period there are eyes staring at me, waiting for me to inspire them with my knowledge of mathematics. I try to be as sarcastic and funny as only I can be.

At the end of each year, I can honestly say that there is improvement of each and every learner that I teach.
