In September 2018, Egypt’s Ministry of Education and Technical Education (MoETE) rolled out a series of unique reforms and launched a “New Education System” under the banner of Education 2.0 (EDU 2.0). These reforms aim to update the education system, prepare youth for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and catapult education towards the Sustainable Development Goals of Egypt Vision 2030. The sector changes in curriculum, teaching and pedagogy, assessment, and digital transformation, among others, aim no less than to transform schooling and learning and put a new educational vision into motion. The challenges are great, as these changes are taking place within a context of a not only a vast and growing school population of over 23 million K-12 students, but perennial issues with resources, private lessons and a shadow education system, equity, quality, a precarious labor market, and just a few years after a wave of popular uprisings (2011-2013). The RDP with its team of independent researchers, document the reforms and generate evidence in a time of enormous change, challenges and educational innovation.

(Note: The project was originally housed at the Social Research Center (SRC) at the American University in Cairo (AUC) and funded with a grant from the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 2020. Due to Covid-19, the funds were cut. The RDP is currently a remote project that runs on a volunteer basis).
The goals of the Education 2.0 Research and Documentation Project (RDP) are to provide original research and documentation on education sector transformation in Egypt. The project also aims to build capacity for 21st Century educational researchers.
