Hello fellow Steemians and welcome to my review of the Azerbaijani flag This is the 11thflag I will be covering in my series to cover most of the flags of the world! I hope you stay along for the ride, enjoy, learn something new and hopefully you will also start enjoying vexillology (the world needs more people getting into vexillology trust me!)
Azerbaijan is the last country to start with the letter A! The plan is to go ahead and try to cover most of the flags in alphabetical order! So we still have long ways to go! Hope you stay for the ride!
Today's Flag is the Flag of Azerbaijan!
The flag of the republic of Azerbaijan is a horizontal triband, consisting of three colors: blue, red and green and in the center it has the Islamic white crescent with an eight pointed star.
This flag was initially adopted when the country declared its independence from Russia after the first world war on November 9, 1918 but in 1920 the country got annexed into the Soviet Union again and the flag was not used until the country declared its independence again on February 5, 1991 right after the Soviet Union dismantled.
"The flag once raised will never fall!" - Rallying cry of Azerbaijani independence
Meaning
The blue color in the flag represents Azerbaijan's Turkic heritage, the people from Azerbaijan belong to the Turkic people group that live on Anatolia, the Caucasus mountains and Central Asia.
The red color represents the efforts of the Azerbaijani people to bring their country into modern times and establish a modern state and a healthy democracy.
The green color represents the connection of the Azerbaijani people to the Islamic world and its culture. On this same vein the white crescent on the middle band of the flag also represents Islam as the majority religion of the country.
The eight pointed star in the flag represents Azerbaijan's connection to the Turkic peoples in the world.
Other Flags
Although Azerbaijan has not been independent for that much, the people that inhabit the region have been living there for centuries and have been under a plethora of different flags.
One of these flags is the Transcaucasian Federation Flag, which was a state that was created on 1918 after the treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed when Russia got dragged out of World War I thanks to the Soviet civil war. This republic quickly fell apart into multiple states that got annexed back into the Soviet Union on 1920.
During its time as a Soviet republic Azerbaijan had a Soviet Styled flag, as with many other Soviet flags, they when trough many minor changes every few years, the soviets really liked changing flags! This is the one they used for the most amount of time while they where a part of the Soviet Union.

Waah! I miss your flag series Luna! Azerbajian is quite loyal to Islam, based on the color and crescent-shaped placed in the middle. ♥
