The biggest challenge in the food supply chain industry is the inability to earn farmers trust, the introduction of new technology doesn’t solve the entire problem and thus there are many challenges embedded in this industry.
Farmers goes through a lot to make goods available in large quantity for consumers yet they make the least amount of profit even when the consumers pay high price for the food. A lot of the profit generated in this sector goes to the middlemen. There is an increasing need to make small farmers and truckers be able to reap the reward of their labour and also make food available, more accessible and less expensive for the consumer. This can be only achieved through the eHarvestHub marketplace powered by the blockchain protocol and smart contracts that remove the multiple layers of middlemen and the need for human involvement in food safety verification. The long-term goal of the eHarvestHub is to enable consumers to directly engage with and buy from small farmers around the world using the platform and token.
Small farmers and truckers take a significant role in making about 60% of food and transport which equate to 90% of the food consumed thus rendering them extremely vital for feeding the world’s population. It is very ironical and funny to know that even though consumers pay a very high price for their food, farmers and truckers still make just a little amount of money as profit. The residency of the food system needs both farmers and truckers to increase their profits. To ensure this happen, the eHarvestHub will create a technology that enables farmers with grocers and showcase availability, ensuring not just food traceability but true transparency for the food.
The eHarvestHub will create a direct relationship with truckers, eHarvestHub removes the layers of middlemen that are taking profits away from small farmers and independent truckers. In the previous years of doing things, the ability of the middlemen to control the sale and transportation of fresh food make them a beneficiary from the status quo while leaving the farmers and truckers in debt. This issue is not just a local one but a global issue that cut across every continent and this is caused by the lack of relationship and direct access between the truckers and the farmers.
The platform aim to remove the need for middlemen, decentralize distribution and gives farmers direct access to truckers and grocers both locally and abroad.
There are however, some reasons why farmers sell their product to the middlemen and these includes:
- The inability to produce enough volume on their own to meet the grocer’s needs. Though it is said that small farmers produces 60-80% of the flood that feeds us but yet the volume produced by each generation is not enough for them to meet the needs thus grocers go to distributors causing then to pay higher prices.
- Another important reason why farmers sell their product to the middlemen is because of low marketing capital:, with low profit margins farmers are unable to market themselves to reach more buyers

It should be noted that the eHarvestHub developed what is termed the world’s largest fresh food marketplace where small farmers, independent truckers and grocers can connect and interact directly. It is a Hub created for farmers, grocers and truckers. This place allows farmers to list their fresh produce, aggregate volume across multiple small farmers and provides grocers one location to shop from and still meet their volume demand. The farmers or grocers can then directly hire independent truckers, much like what the UBER does with passengers and drivers.
EHARVESTHUB PROVIDES ANSWERS TO TRUCKERS NEEDS
The major three needs of the trockers includes: making more money, have more consistent load and to spend more time at home with their family and less on the road, the eHarvestHub will make these three need comes to pass by making truckers be able to market themselves, bypass brokers and have direct access to loads by this, traders will not need to first see the middlemen who offers them just a token. Their won’t be any form of agreement which often prevent brokers from been hired by anyone else with the eHarvestHub there is nothing like this thus they will have consistent load. Also with the eHarvestHub, traders can dictate the money they want per load, the date they are available to work and route they will like to run.

The world is permanently developing and aiming for sustainable development. The project eHarvestHub engaging blockchain in agriculture management is one of the tools for this improvement. I'm glad that I am small, but a part of this project. Good luck!
