Experimenting with embedding pictures shows curious results

My first question is where are embedded content like photos or videos stored? Are they on the server where the content originally sits making only a link or sitting on the blockchain?

My initial experiment would make me think the images sit on the blockchain. First off, I embedded one of my own photos from imgur into a blog and posted. I then deleted the photo from imgur, but the image is still showing in the blog which means it is more than just a link and must be sitting on the Steemit server side.

Secondly, Steemit does not seem to allow me to delete an image from my own blog when I try to update the post which is curious. This would have implications for copyright if one was required to delete content for any reason.

I don't really understand blockchain technology so much but if embedding images and video are more than just linked code would this have implications for the scaleability of the technology?

I've seem people use different host for their images but it must be hosted somewhere. I used steemimg.com to host my pics and link them in my post. Check my latest post:
