Take Time for Self-Care--With William Frazier

in emotional •  6 years ago

Maybe it's just me, but the more I think about it, self-care tends to be one of those things that gets punted down the road until later on in life. It's in that important but not urgent category, along with so many other things that we tend to neglect. Think about the last conversation you had during happy hour or brunch. It probably involved you venting to your friends about how swamped you are at work, or how early you have to wake up each day. It's hard not to focus on these things when it's the norm. We've been conditioned to pride ourselves based on how busy we are each week, measuring progress based on how much we can fit in our schedules. Let me ask you a question. How much time each week do you set aside for self-care? (crickets chirping) If I had a guess, probably not enough. The thing is, self-care doesn't have to take up a whole bunch of time. You don't have to sit there for hours on end, meditating til our butts go numb. In fact, part of my daily routine only involves five minutes of self-care every morning. That's all the time it takes for me to write down my thoughts in my journal. It's amazing how one simple act can make me feel more centered and calm throughout the day. Now there's a good chance self-care means something completely different to you. Maybe instead of writing, your thing is going for a jog, playing video games, or simply talking to a friend. It doesn't matter what your thing is, as long as you actively make time for it each day. Before I made journaling a part of my daily routine, I was frantically writing whenever I had time. I was letting others dictate my own schedule instead of doing something intentionally that made me feel better every day. You may not think self-care's important now, but believe me, if you put it off, it'll come back and grab your attention in the shape of a panic attack, or God forbid, something worse. Don't wait until you're exhausted, stressed out or sleep-deprived to do something about it. Schedule a little bit of time for self-care today, and you'll learn it can go a long way. (mellow uplifting music) .
