I have been an employee for over 40 years and needless to say, there are certainly more benefits than what I have listed below:
- Regular Income
- Benefits and Perks
- You have some form of security
- You can specialize
- You have a coach
They might seem boring but these are fabulous benefits by all means.
Regular Income
The most obvious advantage of remaining an employee is the fact that you are ensured of having money at the end of the month. Your income comes in regularly, in good times, and bad times, you will get your pay. This does not apply in business. While there may be good times when you make a lot of money, there will also be times, when you can not even pay the electric bill.
Benefits and Perks
Another positive point of being an employee is the benefits and perks that come with the job. These may include free medical care, dental care, child care, health insurance, life insurance, discounted price for company products, and at times, even stock options. These benefits are important as they form 30 to 40 percent of the basic salary of most employees. If all these were coming from your pocket, it will drain a big portion of it.
And of course, some employees become rich, even attaining millionaires status by exercising their stock options.
You have some form of Security
This is related to the first and second points, you have some form of security by remaining as an employee. You know what you will get at the end of the month or a year, even 3 years, 5 years down the road.
You can Specialize
By remaining an employee, you can specialize in your chosen field. For example, if you are a dentist, learn all you can about dentistry and that’s all you need to know and do. You will be an expert, a specialist, and one hell of a dentist. People will come knocking at your door. And they will not care that you know nothing about marketing, finance, the management, or legal matters.
But if you have the time, please, do learn some of these stuffs. It will certainly make you a more knowledgable person. And who knows, all these will come in handy if you wish to venture out on your own.
You have a Coach.
When you join a company, it is very likely that you will undergo some form of training. You may even have a coach, tutor, or mentor to guide you, particularly in the beginning stage. This is an ideal way to learn anything.
However, when you are on your own, in most cases, almost everything has to be self-taught. In fact, you may even have to teach and guide others even though you are wandering in the dark yourself.
All the above benefits are good and indeed are fabulous reasons to stay as an employee. But wait!. There is still one more reason, one shining point, one glorious reason to stay as an employee and continue to do so — because you love doing it. ( for those who love their job)
We need to treat this carefully here. You must truly love what you are doing and not just say it to disguise your fear of leaving. It is also a known fact that lots of people are using this as an excuse from quitting their jobs. They are too scared to venture on their own and use “love my job” as a front to hide their fear.
And they are others who absolutely love what they are doing. They enjoy their work, they love the place and all things that come with the responsibility. In other words, they would be doing the same thing even if there is no or little money in it.
This, I am sure many of you will agree, this is above all, the best reason to stay on as an employee.
That’s all for now, friends. See you all in my next article.
