What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a painful, chronic and progressive condition which is characterized by an abnormal growth of the endometrial cells --- that is, the cells which comprise the endometrium (the inner lining of the uterus). To manage this condition, there are some extremely beneficial herbal products which together constitute an effective Endometriosis treatment in Ayurveda.

In Endometriosis, the endometrial cells (the cells which are shed during the menstrual cycle every month) grow outside of the endometrium, though they should typically form its inner layer. As a result of their abnormal growth in women suffering from Endometriosis, the endometrial cells form nodules or patches on pelvic organs, and even on the inner lining of the abdomen and pelvis (the peritoneum).

The endometrial cells which grow abnormally outside of the uterus on other parts of the body have the same cyclical/menstrual changes inside the uterus as well as outside of it. In other words, these abnormally-growing cells may bleed in coincidence with the monthly periods of women affected by Endometriosis.

Endometriosis affects the reproductive organs of the women suffering from the condition. Though the condition is more common in women who are experiencing infertility as compared to fertile women, it is not necessarily a cause of infertility.

Generally, the most common Endometriosis symptoms are menstrual irregularities and pain in the vagina, rectum, pelvis, lower abdomen, and lower back.

The exact cause behind the occurrence of Endometriosis is not yet known, but it is believed that the condition is apparently associated with retrograde menstruation, disorders of the immune system, transformation of peritoneal cells, embryonic cell transformation, surgical scar implantation (after surgeries like hysterectomy or C-section), and transport of endometrial cells from inner side of the uterus to other parts of the body by blood vessels or lymphatic system.

Endometriosis Symptoms

Some of the symptoms which usually indicate the occurrence of Endometriosis include:

  • Dysmenorrhea (painful periods)
  • Menorrhagia (heavy periods / excessive bleeding)
  • Menometrorrhagia (bleeding between periods)
  • Pain in the pelvic area and lower back
  • Severe menstrual cramps
  • Pain during sex
  • Infertility / difficulty becoming pregnant
  • Pain with bowel movements or urination
  • Other symptoms during periods like nausea, bloating, fatigue, diarrhoea, or constipation.

Overall, one of the main Endometriosis symptoms is pelvic pain, mostly associated with the menstrual period. Despite the fact that a lot of women experience severe cramps during their menstrual periods, the menstrual pain which is usually described by women suffering from Endometriosis is far more unbearable, and it generally increases over time.

Treatment of Endometriosis in Ayurveda

Endometriosis treatment in Ayurveda unfolds an extremely safe approach for relieving the common symptoms associated with the condition. Although the use of medications (Non steroid anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs), surgery and hormonal replacement therapy are some of the widely used treatments for the condition, Ayurvedic products offered by renowned herbal manufacturing companies are very beneficial in managing Endometriosis symptoms without any side-effects.

Ayurvedic approach for Endometriosis involves the use of potent herbal products for balancing the body’s three doshas --- Vata, Pitta and Kapha. In the opinion of Ayurvedic experts, all the three doshas are responsible for the occurrence of Endometriosis; with Vata being specifically involved in this particular condition and other gynaecological disorders also.

Due to the vitiated Vata, endometrial cells get displaced from their usual location inside the uterus to the outside, leading to extremely painful monthly periods in women affected by Endometriosis. Meanwhile, the vitiated Pitta causes changes in hormone levels, blood flow and inflammation in endometrium; and vitiated Kapha causes an overgrowth of endometrial cells.

The herbal products which constitute Endometriosis treatment in Ayurveda have proven to be highly effective in providing relief from pain and other Endometriosis symptoms. These herbal products include:
