never heard anybody use that phrase before

It sounds rare to me, too. It could be a near obsolete one.

But I can give you a Simpsons quote right away. See:

http://simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/Sideshow_Bob%27s_Last_Gleaming/Quotes

Sideshow Bob: Ah, for the days when aviation was a gentleman's pursuit back before every Joe sweat sock could wedge himself behind a lunch tray and jet off to Raleigh-Durham.

Now, Sideshow Bob is someone who would be inclined to use vocabulary somewhat off the beaten path.

Hi Markku. Totally correct. We all jet off somewhere at least once a year hopefully.

Very modern phrase!

I jetted off to another place, because there was no bread, I had to travel a lot to the other bakery.

Wow that's sounds cool though. First time to heard of it
