The Psalm 77 is a prayer to God from a devout man; with great concern, the author of the song wondered if the creator of all things did not forget of the covenant between him and his people.
Most likely this song or supplication was composed during the exile in Babylon, a time in which the exiled Jews wondered what their fate would be.
This song has a great analogy with the character of Job, who in the Book that bears his name, the character questioned his misfortunes and his heartbreaking situation. And this song leaves a great moral teaching, every man has to be prepared for everything in life, for both, good and bad, happiness and sadness, and in the face of difficulties and hopelessness, when there are no answers, only the spiritual gift of fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion) remains because the ways of the Lord are enigmatic, there are situations in which God can allow an evil, to extract from it a great good.
The Psalm begins by recounting a moment of intimacy, in silence and at night, in which the psalmist meditated on God and his mercy with these words:
"I cried out to God for help;
I cried out to God to hear me.
When I was in distress, I sought the Lord;
at night I stretched out untiring hands,
and I would not be comforted" Psalm 77:1-2.
Then the author of the Psalm delved into hope, and remembered with longing the wonders of the past; and sought God's answer by wondering if God is also affected by human imperfections:
"I remembered you, God, and I groaned;
I meditated, and my spirit grew faint.
You kept my eyes from closing;
I was too troubled to speak.
I thought about the former days,
the years of long ago;
I remembered my songs in the night.
My heart meditated and my spirit asked:
´Will the Lord reject forever?
Will he never show his favor again?
Has his unfailing love vanished forever?
Has his promise failed for all time?
Has God forgotten to be merciful?
Has he in anger withheld his compassion?" Psalm 77:3-9.
The Psalm after a long speech ends by recognizing the holiness and sovereignty of God over the world:
"Your ways, God, are holy" Psalm 77:13.
