When choosing a material for gaskets, most people choose neoprene or silicone. It's because it's widely distributed all around the world. EPDM gaskets, on the other hand, have a number of features and advantages over other materials. EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene monomer) is an excellent gasket material.
Physical Properties
At normal temperature, ethylene and propylene remain gaseous. When these two hydrocarbons come together, they form solid-state polymers (polyethylene and polypropylene). EPDM is then produced by carefully regulating the polymerization process and including an appropriate proportion of both hydrocarbons ( i.e., ethylene and propylene). Long molecular chains are formed throughout the process, resulting in a high-elastic material. EPDM may remain flexible at low temperatures while remaining unaffected at high temperatures. Oxidation and ultraviolet light have no influence on the EPDM material.
EPDM is a popular and commonly used rubber because of its superior mechanical qualities. It has high tensile strength, making it more durable and powerful than silicone and neoprene. EPDM rubber gaskets are extremely resistant to strong substances such as acids and alkalis. Its heat-resistant qualities also make it perfect for steam-based applications.
Advantages for Boilers Industry
Rubber gaskets, as previously stated, are extremely durable and can tolerate harsh climatic conditions. In harsh temperatures ranging from -60°F to 300°F, it provides reliable, long-lasting sealing properties. The material's main advantages are its resilience to wear and tear increased color stability, and resistance to UV, aging, and harsh weather.
Grades Classification
Talking about the material, sponge, foam, and some solid substances are used to make the gaskets. Every material has a unique molecular structure that increases the strength of its resistance. We can classify EPDM gaskets into the following categories:-
. Peroxide-cured
. FDA approved
. UL 94 flame-retardant
Applications
Particularly in the case of EPDM gaskets, we need them in the following situations:-
. It can endure high-temperature changes, UV radiation, wind, ozone, and water, making it ideal for outdoor use.
. this material is ideal for electrical installations because of its strong electrical resistance,
EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a versatile substance that can be used in a variety of applications. Consider it as a great alternative to silicone and neoprene that is also reasonably priced.
