I was in the local shop which had put its new price labels out without its Epos updating. This is a common problem with Epos and chains - because they rely on the process being seamless and its not.
So I was at the till with an item that was signed at one price but rang through at another.
The cashier told me I was wrong. "You must have read it wrong" she said. No, I said... its clearly marked at that. "No its not" she said "the till is never wrong".
The till was wrong.
The line stood gathering numbers as I went back to photograph the sign with my phone. The manager was called. She started explaining how the price and the label could be wrong... that's Ok I said. I live in the modern world.
Then I went back to the till and was like "you see, I was not in fact wrong. I was in fact right. And it was entirely your choice to be condescending. It was your choice to gaslight me. You have been trained by the modern world to tell customers they are wrong and hope they will go away and stop bothering you. But customers bothering you IS your job. And the sooner you get excited about solving customer problems rather than punching those buttons on the till, the happier you will be."
You see, the reality is we were all Karen, screaming into the void because we feel gaslit by modern life.
And its because we are.
But actually I said thanks and walked away. I'd saved 65c
