In the United States along, over 30 million men suffer from erectile dysfunction - also called ED, or impotence. Erectile dysfunction is simply the persistent inability to achieve and maintain an erection suitable for penetrative sex.

ED can affect men at any age, depending on the underlying cause, but it's most common in older men.

Erectile dysfunction is not, in itself, a disease. It's a symptom of an underlying problem, which may be medical or psychological. Sometimes ED can indicate a serious underlying problem. Because there are many causes for ED, there is no single best treatment.

If you are experiencing ED, you should see a doctor. The doctor can determine the cause of your ED, and recommend appropriate treatment for your specific condition.

Common causes of ED include:

• Vascular/circulatory problems (the most common cause)
• Neurological and nerve disorders
• Side effects of prescription medication
• Drug or alcohol abuse
• Anxiety, stress, or depression
• Hormonal or vitamin deficiencies

Treatments for ED

The standard first-line treatment for ED is an oral medication like Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, or the generic equivalents. These medications work well for 60-70% of men with ED. Side effects can include headaches, nausea, backache or muscle pain, running nose or congestion, flushing, and blurry vision. In most cases these side effects and minimum and well-tolerated.

For men who cannot take oral medications due to side-effects or conflicts with other medications, or who don't respond to the medications, there are a few other FDA approved treatments, including:

• Penile injections
• Penile suppositories
• Vacuum pumps and constriction rings
• Inflatable or malleable penile implants

Most men also benefit from lifestyle changes, including aerobic exercise, a heart-healthy Mediterranean diet, reducing alcohol consumption, and eliminating tobacco use.

New and Experimental Treatments for ED

There are a number of new treatments for ED, some of which are already available. However, these treatments have not undergone large scale, peer-reviewed clinical studies. Most of the claims regarding their effectiveness come from the clinics that provide these services. These treatments include:

• Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injection Therapy
• Low-Intensity Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (LI-ESWT)
• Stem Cell Therapy
• Topical gels or ointments

Psychological Impact

Studies have shown that ED can have a dramatic effect on the emotional well-being of both men and their partners. Effects include loss of self-esteem and confidence, anxiety, and depression. In addition, ED often reduces feelings of intimacy between partners, and can damage or destroy relationships.

It's important for men to talk with their partners about their feelings, and explore options together. Many couples find it helpful to work with a relationship counselor or a sex coach trained to deal with erectile dysfunction.

ED doesn't have to mean the end to your sexual relationship. By exploring new ways to share intimacy and give one another pleasure, couples can have a great sex life, whether or not the man is able to achieve an erection.
