In morphology, sea urchins are divided into two groups: regularia pig or regular sea urchin and irregular sea urchin (irregular sea urchin). The sea urchin has a pentagon shape. In the shell there are five white spots and anal sac (anal sac) is black and the hole is surrounded by a yellow ring. The tube and thorn legs allow these animals to crawl on the surface of the reef and can also be used to walk on sand. Generally these animals are algae eaters.

The type of sea urchin that has important consumption value in Indonesia is Diadema setosum. Diadema setosum is one type of sea urchin that has economic value. The part of the body consumed is the gonads.

Gonads can be used as alternative food sources because they contain 28 kinds of amino acids, vitamin B complex, vitamin A, minerals, omega-3 fatty acids, and omega-6. Omega-3 fatty acids nutritious to lower cholesterol levels in the blood and reduce the risk of heart disease. While the shell has potential as anticancer, antitumor and antimicrobial (quoted from the publication of Hadinoto et al, 2017, JPB Marine and Fisheries).

Some types of sea urchins have a shell coated with black pigment that can be used for the staining of nets and skin. Pig shells can also be used for jewelry. Wastewater processing waste, in the form of innards can be further processed into fertilizer.

The pig shells contain active compounds that are toxic. Estimated toxins that exist in the shell and thorns can be used as a drug ingredient. As an antimicrobial, pig shells contain bioactive compounds. This bioactive compound is able to inhibit the growth of E. coli bacteria.
