My Own Lyrics Challenge 1960 - The Twist - Hank Ballard

"The Twist" is a dance song with the lyrics talking about doing the dance and feeling free to do it. None of the moves are described, and came about when Chubby Checker created them for his cover version of the song This version was responsible for the Twist dance craze of the early 1960's.

My Own Lyrics Challenge is going through the years to spotlight cool songs and this post is for 1960. Chubby Checker's version of “The Twist” became a hit, reaching number 1 upon release, and again a few months later as more people caught onto the dance. The song was number 10 on the year end Billboard Hot 100.

In 2014, Billboard magazine named the song the "biggest hit" of the 1960’s decade.

This video version shows Chubby Checker lip syncing and dancing The Twist on American Bandstand in the year of release.

And this compilation video shows many views of people dancing to the song or doing the twist to other songs.
