My Favourite Topic: People With Food - Gado2 Nasi Lontong

Hello Steemit Fellows😉

image my happiness is watching this guy eating his breakfast

What a nice day to start this week with more spirit and encouraging words. I've seen friends made curation of other friends last week. And I've seen strangers become friends through curation contest too😊 taking my words into account to create more inspiring posts. These hectic days in the shop seem will never end and nothing to complaint at all, I'm so grateful for everything in my life and on Steemit.

Before moving out to Pamulang, South Tangerang, Banten, Indonesia, I have a happy life in my hometowns, yup I have 2 places that I considered as my hometowns, Banda Aceh and Lhokseumawe in Aceh Province. When I was in Elementary School ( I didn't go to kindergarten but spent 7 years at the elementary school, others usually take 6 years), my favorite's breakfast was simply sandwich😊 sliced wheat bread with margarine and sugar sprinkled. My Dad was preparing it for us while Mommy still on her bed due to pregnancy or sickness. When I entered junior and senior high school, breakfast has never be a routine to start the day for me, sometimes because we cannot afford to buy the bread but sometimes because I'm too lazy to prepare and have any breakfast though😆. Till I left my parents' house to continued my study in Banda Aceh, I seldom have breakfast. After reading @donna-metcalfe reaction about breakfast and foods through comments, I think that I need to share my favorite topic so far on Steemit😀 people around me, hardworking men and women and things they sell everyday around the place where I live now.

Gado-gado Lontong or rice bar and various vegetables with peanut sauce👍👍👍

image fresh from the blender stone, on site

I have eaten this kind of food as breakfast or lunch during the days in unversity, friends would just bought me this food as bribery😂 well.. I was calling as Preman, the pushover person😊though I've never used any violation to be one. So, let's keep it for another post later and continue with the food.

image the seller is pushing his cart to go to a place where he usually parks his cart and wait for customers, this is the first time I saw him passes by our shop and I stopped him, it was 10 am

5 people were there at the shop and they said they'd like to have breakfast, so I asked the seller to prepare 4 with medium hot taste and 1 with non-hot taste of Gado-gado Lontong for me. And here are the pictures of how he prepared the food for us.

image after parking his cart in a safe mode😄 he starts by pinching the fresh chayenes for the hot taste with a little help of salt

image He uses the wooden pincher

image He adds water to liquid the spicy peanuts paste and turn it into sauce and add lime juice to add an extra refresh favor

image next step is slicing the rice bars

image add the boiled vegetables and split into 4 piles

image almost complete

image ready to wrap

image done and wrap it

The final additional things to add before the food delivered to customers is chips or kerupuk.

People here in Pamulang call this food Gado2 Lontong, while people in Aceh will call this Lontong Pecal. Gado-gado is a word that referring to a mixed of various kind of things, whether to eat or to do. In this Gado2 Lontong, The Seller use boiled corns, green bean sprouts, water spinach, papaya leaf, cassava leaf, long bean, fried marinated tofu and tempe, potatoes and chayotes, aahh the fresh cucumber. In Aceh, if people use boiled vegetables will call it as pecal, and Gado-gado for fresh vegetables with egg and spesific peanut sauce with coconut milk.

The seller usually prepares the ready to use peanuts paste/sauce and here is the information about the peanut sauce 👉 About Peanut Sauce, the peanut sauce also use as meat skewer sauce🍢, noodles 🍲 and as dip for fries.

That's all for this post😉 I am so glad that the seller let me took his pictures and activity on preparing this food for us. After giving the money for the price of 5 wrapped foods @12k equal to $0.8, total is 60k equal to $4, He continues to packed up and push his cart to his usual place about 300 meters from our shop.

I am trying to imagine if we have something like that or its counterpart here but I do not think so. We do not have a mix of all those ingredients you mentioned. We only have kare-kare but is a way different than that. 😊

My breakfast is plain: rice. Viand will depend on what was prepared but rice is definitely part of the meal. Though lately, I notice more and more people are sorting to bread we call pandesal and coffee. I can live with that as breakfast but I easily get hungry before lunch so I have to take a break. While if I take rice, I can stay up to lunch time. 😊

Helloo rice lover 😉 if you have special veggie salad with mayonaise, it would be the same.. but mayonaise is nothing to compare with the delicious peanut sauce. I don't really know where is this food came from, all I knew the fact is the Javanese brought this recipe to all over Indonesia.

In Aceh, we usually have various kind of breakfast such fried rice or nasi goreng, bu gurih or rice cooked with coconut milk, rice cake with filling, bread, porridge, grilled sticky rice and many more. Here in Java Island, various kind breakfast almost the same but sometimes it is more like a brunch rather than breakfast😆 my costumers ask me to cook instant noodles for their breakfast, some other custs will be okay with the bread and coffee. If I eat this food as breakfast... I'll be full until diner time.

Tell me about kare-kare😊 is it something like our curry here?

What is kare-kare? Hhhmm... I do not cook so that is a tough question but let me try... Or at least I can do the internet search. 😂

It is saucy like curry but the sauce is peanut sauce, not of curry powder. Its main ingredient is oxtail supposedly by default but since oxtail is rare, anything can go - pork, chicken meat, seafoods like prawns or squid. Most of the time, I see pork as the main ingredient. I also tried a version of pure vegetables and it tasted good.

The main meat ingredient is boiled until tender. Then ground roasted peanuts and ground glutinous rice are added to make the sause thicker. In the absence of ground roasted peanut, peanut butter can be used. Anatto from achoite is added for coloring then followed by vegetables. Ideally, the vegetable to be added is sliced banana flower bud, the still young ones. But again, that may not be available most of the time so substitutes can be eggplant, beans or cabbage (ideally the pechay variety).

Once it is cooked, it is best served hot with shrimp paste which we call alamang. Kare-kare can be eaten without the shrimp paste but is not complete without the alamang. It actually makes me eat more than I usually do. 😜

Whooaa.. that's a complicated recipe for me😉 you're right.. it is different from our curry, I've never seen any traditional food from Indonesia use the peanut butter, all I know that even if peanut paste can be use to subtitute coconut paste or candlenut, but nobody use peanut paste to make curry😊 though we can ad the banana bud or its inner and soft stem along with the beef or chicken.

Asia has many unique food recipes and it is modified according to the situation of the community and environment. Thank you for sharing about the kare2☺

Kare-kare tastes good. You should try it sometime. Anyway, recipe is all over the internet.

You're welcome. :)

Mangat that 😄

Lumayan lah... padahal kalau tempat kita disebut pecal, makannya pake nasi sama peyek 😂

Oh gitu😄😄

Yang penting enak den... gado2 atau pecal..sama2 bikin kenyang😉

Very tasty i guess

I always love it when you show the pictures of the little cart sellers. I use to work at a place in Florida that had a lunch cart come around. It was like a van wit a lift up side panel. They had stuff like hot dogs and burgers.
Do you have ice cream trucks there? Our icecream truck plays music and only runs in summer.

  ·  6 years ago (edited)

Uhmm..ice cream truck? No..we have ice cream bike with their commercial jingle😊 beside... I sell ice cream everyday too, off course not something special like those in your country that I watched in the movie😉

Well, the van that selling something with a lift up side panel here is selling coffee, phone card token, shoes, bags and mobile bank☺ I think people learned to run the "mobile business" or got inspired by the American movies😉

Some one from Nigeria was talking to me recently. The thing we were discussing ended up being another of those American things. He also said he knew of things from movies.
For some reason that strikes a cord in me. Something I would like to explore further, after I think about it.
I don't live in the city anymore. Now life is very rural so probably more like yours. Well except no food carts.
That is the one thing I miss about the city is food delivery.
I bet you have good ice cream flavors. Sometimes we make old fashion ice cream The old ice cream makers have a crank, It is a lot of work turning the crank but it tastes way better.
Those carts selling everything sound interesting.
I will be back to ask more noset questions for sure.

What do you expect from an ice cream vendors? They produce massive ice cream bar and put it along with the freezer anywhere including our shop. But yes, we have special flavors like mango, durian, green bean and coconut milk ice creams here.. you know tropical island fruits and some ice creams are a frizen version of local food desert too like green bean porridge and coconut's milk with the its meat snd water.

When I still lived in Aceh, men who are selling home made ice cream bars and mixed ice creams park their bike with wooden box full of salty ice to keep it from melting in front of every school but sometimes they are cycling around the town too. Though there're so many massive ice cream freezer anywhere, but dome people still look for the homemade ice cream man.

Ice cream was an expensive kind of food for us, but now.. with so many food companies that produce ice creams, the price is getting cheap and walls ice cresm still selling by men around the town.

We have so many people that had a chance to stay in America for study or in Europe countries, no wonder if they applied some of the inspiring business and modified it to be able to accept and accordance with the socio-community here in Indonesia. Your place have its similarities sotuation with el-nailul town, I guess.

Mango sounds perfect! I don't know what durian is but green been for us is a vegtable served as a side dish with meat or sometimes in soupe. The thought of green bean as a desert item is strange but interesting.
Do you have super markets there? even our small towns have supermarkets otherwise most people would starve to death 😆
More people are starting to homestead again now but still even most of those people have weekly trips to the super market.
What are the things you call chips? They look different than american chips too.

image chips or kerupuk, we have so many kind of chips here

Well.. I don't know whether the green bean or mung bean here in Indonesia the same green bean at yours, because its green then people call it green bean 😆. Aahh I didn't have the picture on my phone😊

oh ok I have heard of mung bean. It is a different kind of bean for sure.
We have tons of different chips too. Maybe one day I will get to travel so I can find out all the little details that nobody thinks to tell about.
Those twirley white ones are pretty they look like pretzels dipped in white chocolate.

  ·  6 years ago (edited)

Does pretzel has the shrimp and garlic taste? We eat those chip along with rice or other side dish like this

image the chips that my hubby eats with the instant fried noddles is made from cow's skin.. not the outer skin but a layer under the outer

We call it kerupuk kulit or skin's chip.. and you need a glass of water right in front of you when consuming the chips in case you need to prevent being choked😊
