SEOUL - North Korea (North Korea) threatens to fight the United States if it holds a joint military exercise with South Korea (South Korea). Pyongyang also said it would not ask for talks with Washington.
The US is scheduled to begin joint exercises in early April, a South Korean president's security adviser said this week according to Yonhap news agency. This is the latest joint military exercise in a series of exercises that have generally been described by North Korea as a threat.
"If the United States ends up conducting joint military exercises while still sanctioning the DPRK, the DPRK will fight against the US in its own preventive measures and the US will be held accountable for further consequences," the official North Korean news agency KCNA said in an editorial.
KCNA also said that the exercise would jeopardize the reconciliation efforts on the peninsula.
The DPRK is an acronym of the country's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
On Feb. 23, the United States said it implemented the largest sanctions package to pressure North Korea to halt its nuclear and missile programs. President Donald Trump warns of a "phase two" that can be very, very unfortunate for the world if its steps do not work.
