My favourite market in Nongkhai, ตลาดเช้าที่เราชอบที่หนองคาย

This is my entry for #thaiphotocontest61 hosted by @thaiteam. The most lively and colourful morning market in Nongkhai is the Phochai market which is about four kilometers from the railways station. My personal tuk-tuk knows my market drill very well. He would pick me up early at the railway station and take me to my friends’ food stall by the old temple; whenever they take days off we would head to Phochai market.

Lots of fresh vegetables at reasonable prices as these were grown locally.

Most of the vendors in the market could recognise me straight away as an alien from Bangkok. My outfit and my hat make me look like a Japanese or Korean tourist sightseeing the local market. I am the only tourist taking photos of those humble vegetables and delicious mushrooms including all those jasmine garlands. I know they often wonder why I never try their delicious local food; they don’t know that I am mostly a vegetarian. That’s why I always stop at the fresh tofus stall. I could never find freshly made tofu without any added chemicals in Bangkok. I always buy four pieces of tofu which would last me two days.

Hand-made fresh tofu everyday! Deep fried tofu and vegetarian spring rolls are very delicious too.

There are always strange fruits and sometimes wild mushrooms or rare edible forest flowers with medicinal properties on displayed by old villagers. People here are very fond of mushrooms so I have to be quick before they are sold out in a few hours.

Lots of fresh eggs, fruits stalls around the perimeter of the market hall. Though there are many fresh meat, chicken and fish stalls in the other side of the market, I just don’t feel comfortable walking in that side. So, there are no photos of that section here. I prefer to stay with fruits,vegetables and sweets.

How about fresh bread! The old Vietnamese people who settled down in Nongkhai almost a hundred years ago had taught their children to bake bread and French bread or ‘bagatte’ as a livelihood. Several Vietnamese food stalls could be found in the fast food zone inside the market too.

These are children’ sweets, snack and toys to be sold very cheaply at schools’ shops; I don’t think these are very healthy!

If you need a tricycle to transport your shopping home, several strong cyclists would be very happy to help you. But if you live too far out, a tuk-tuk could be very convenient too.

ถ้าไปเที่ยวหนองคายเราจะไม่ยอมพลาดตลาดเช้าที่นั่นแน่นอน เมื่อถึงสถานีรถไฟหนองคาย รถตุ๊กตุ๊กใช้เวลาเพียงสิบนาที เราก็ถึงตลาดโพธิ์ชัยซึ่งเป็นตลาดเช้าที่ใหญ่มาก คราคร่ำไปด้วยผู้คนและมีข้าวของให้เลือกซื้อมากมาย ถ้าวันไหนเพื่อนที่มีแผงขายอาหารเช้าไม่มา เราก็ต้องตรงไปตลาดทันที ราคาผักและสินค้าเกษตรมีราคาถูกมาก เพราะเป็นของที่ปลูกในท้องที่ เราชอบเวลาที่มีเห็ดสดออกมาขาย ลูกค้าจะแย่งกันเลือกเห็ดอย่างมันมือ เราไม่ค่อยจะทันเพราะเลือกไม่เป็นเลย สิ่งที่ขาดไม่ได้คือเต้าหู้สดและไข่ไก่ ปลาทูสำหรับแมว และขนมกินเล่นอีกหลายอย่าง

บรรยากาศตอนเช้าก็คึกคัก หนาแน่นไปด้วยผู้คน รถจักรยานยนต์ รถสามล้อถีบรับจ้างและรถตุ๊กตุ๊ก บางคนไปเก็บของป่าหรือเก็บพืชผลไม้ และจับปลามาวางขายที่ตลาดในตอนเช้า มีของคาวของหวานของแห้ง ตลอดจนน้ำพริกแปลกไม่วางขายด้วย เราคิดว่าตลาดเช้าที่นี่เป็นตลาดที่เดินช็อปได้อย่างเพลิดเพลินมาก หิวเมื่อไรก็มีร้านอาหารให้เลือกชิม เราชอบเดินดูของที่นี่มาก

The morning vibes at the market are very busy, lively and energetic. Lots of motor bikes, tricycles for hire and tuk-tuk, plus local people. This atmosphere always wakes me up from my train journey.

These are bamboo shoots; some have been sliced and boiled making it very convenient for cooking a quick recipe.

After getting all the vegetables, eggs and tofu, I would survey the local fashion trend by walking along the narrow alley by the market hall. Clothing, shoes, boots and bags are very cheap in this market comparing with those you have to pay for in big shopping malls.

พอเราซื้อของเสร็จ เราก็เดินเล่นดูเสื้อผ้าและของพวกแฟชั่นในซอยข้างๆตลาด ราคาเสื้อผ้าของใช้ราคาถูกกว่าในห้างใหญ่มาก แถมยังต่อราคาได้ด้วย เราชอบซื้อรองเท้าบูทที่นี่ เราเดินผ่านทางนี้เพื่อไปร้านขายของหวานที่อยู่ใกล้ๆทางนี้ ในตลาดมีร้านขายของหวานหลายร้าน เราแปลกใจที่คนแถวนี้ทำของหวานเก่งมาก เราต้องซื้อของหวานสองถุงใหญ่เพื่อเอาไปฝากคนสวน และเก็บเอาไว้กินสองวันด้วย

Several Thai sweets have their origins from the Portuguese who came to settle in Siam during the reign of King Narai whose capitol city was Lopburi (about two hours’ drive from Bangkok). Some Thai tourists found similar Thai sweets in Portugal and thought these were imitations of Thai sweets! Then there’s my favourite snack made from steamed rice flour-pancake with mushroom and green Chinese herbs stuffing!! Very delicious and healthy.

I hope you will have a chance to visit Nongkhai one day! There are about a dozen European expats living here: a British pub, an English run guest house, a yoga school, a Dutch bakery and coffee shop!

I have to remind myself not to put all the eggs in one basket!!
