River and Klong Photography Contest and Feathered Friday, Afternoon by River Chao Phraya in Bangkok.

This is my entry for #thaiphotocontest37 on river and klong photography. I also managed to get some pigeons for the first time so this fits #featheredfriday too. Pigeons are very common but I wondered if my iPhone would perform for me. #featheredfriday by @keithboone.

These photos were taken at Wat Yannawa, at the back of the old Ordination Hall. There is a small pier and a Sala (a roofed shelter without walls) by the River Chao Phraya. A stall sells fish food pellets to visitors who would like to feed the big swarm of fish in the river. Buddhists like to buy live fish for releasing them into rivers and ponds. They believe that by saving some fish from being sold in the market (for consumption) and giving them new life would bring them a lot of good merits. So, some vendors could be seen in front of some temples,situated close to rivers, selling live fish for releasing them into the rivers.

Being released by the temple pier for religious beliefs, these fish are very spoiled and well fed! Many people will buy buckets of pellet food to feed these fish as a way of giving ‘dana’ or ‘tamboon’ (making merits to accumulate good karma). These fish will just wait around for free food and they grow very big and long after a few years. They are too lazy to swim far away as they know people will feed them. Their lives are very safe as no Buddhists would dare catching them for fear of bad karma and bad luck. I have never seen any fisherman trying to catch these big fish.

The spilled food pellets attract pigeons to this area making them also too lazy to look for food elsewhere. The pigeons and fish have become very tame and they are not afraid of people at all. I had to make big effort to frighten these pigeons so that they would fly around for my photo session! Two girls were feeding the fish in the river so some pigeons began to surround the surrounding area.

วันที่เราไปเดินเล่นที่วัดยานนาวา เราได้เดินไปที่ท่าน้ำเพื่อดูปลาที่คนมาปล่อยที่ท่าน้ำมาหลายปี เราอยากรู้ว่าปลาตัวโตมากไหม และมีมากมายเพียงใด ปัจจุบันเขาติดป้ายห้ามเลี้ยงนกพิราบ จึงมีแต่ร้านขายอาหารเม็ดสำหรับเลี้ยงปลา คนไทยเชื่อเรื่องการทำบุญ ปล่อยนกปล่อยปลา สมัยก่อนเพื่อนเราชอบพาเราไปซื้อปลาจากตลาดกัน คนละหลายกิโล แล้วเอาไปปล่อยที่คลองและแม่น้ำ เดี๋ยวนี้ตามหน้าวัดที่อยู่ใกล้แม่น้ำ ก็จะมีแม่ค้ามานั่งขายปลาเป็นๆ ให้เลือกซื้อไปปล่อยเพื่อทำบุญ สะเดาะห์เคราะห์กัน ปลาที่ปล่อยตามวัดก็จะมีอาหารกินประจำ มันจะว่ายวนไปมาและรอคอยคนมาโยนอาหารให้มัน ทำให้ปลาพวกนี้โตเร็วมาก และกลายเป็นปลาขี้เกียจ หาอาหารเองไม่เป็น โชคดีที่ไม่มีใครกล้ามาจับปลาที่ปล่อยนี้ไปขายไปกินกัน คนไทยกลัวบาป และไม่กล้าเอาปลาไปกินเพราะกลัวว่าจะมีโชคร้ายตามมาด้วย

ส่วนนกพิราบก็มาจ้องคอยกินอาหารเม็ด ที่ตกกระจายที่พื้น นกพวกนี้ก็อ้วนและขี้เกียจไปด้วย พอเห็นคนมาเลี้ยงอาหารปลา มันก็พากันขยับเข้ามาใกล้ ทั้งปลาและนกพิราบอ้วน ขี้เกียจ และไม่กลัวคนเลย พวกมันโชคดีที่ไม่ได้ไปอยู่ที่อาร์เยนตินา นกพิราบ แมวและสุนัขจรจัดไม่มีเหลือเลย เราต้องพยายามอย่างมากในการทำให้นกพิราบบินไปมาให้เราถ่ายรูป เราต้องทำเสียงดังและไล่นกพิราบ จนคนแถวนั้นหันมามอง เราก็ยกไอโฟนถ่ายรูปไปเรื่อย เพราะไม่สามารถบอกนกพิราบให้หยุดนิ่งๆกลางอากาศ ให้เราถ่ายถาพสวยๆได้ แต่ก็โชคดี ไอโฟนมีความไวพอทำให้เราได้รูปนกกำลังบินมาหลายใบ
