This is my entry for #thaiphotocontest61 on garden photography hosted by @thaiteam. This was the first time I had the chance to visit my friend’s new house after he has settled down in Nongkhai last year.
This friend never told me that he was following my example of self-sufficiency life style and was thinking of moving to Nongkhai over two years ago. He did keep his secret until I found out from his friends that he had bought a house in Nongkhai. He never asked me for any advise but he did manage to find a very nice house in a good location there.
After two years of preparation, he decided to quit his job and move to his new house. He actually bought extra land by the house so that he could plant trees and grow his own vegetables. He told me that had enough of city life and wanted to do gardening. I had no idea that he has always been quite crazy about planting trees and keeping orchids.
So, within six months he has transformed the empty land by his house into a green jungle full of fruit trees, herbs and vegetables. He studied for hours on YouTube about soil improvement and bought many seeds from other gardeners online. He even gave me several vegetable seeds.

He did send me some photos of his house while under construction; I was quite impressed by the high quality of building materials and construction. He told me that it was as if he was led there by his guardians; the management and staff have always been very nice and friendly. I was quite glad that things turn out amazingly delightful for him. He now has his dream home with a big garden and two of his adopted stray cats plus four tiny kittens.
เมื่อต้นเดือนที่ผ่านมา เราได้มีโอกาสไปเที่ยวบ้านเพื่อนที่หนองคาย เพื่อนคนนี้เก็บความลับว่าเขาตามตัวอย่างของเรา ในการใช้ชีวิตแบบพอเพียง และการปลูกผักผลไม้ปลอดสารพิษไว้กินเอง เขาไม้เคยยอกเราเลยว่าเขาก็อยากมีบ้านที่หนองคายเหมือนกัน เจาแอบไปหาข้อมูลและซื้อบ้านที่หมู่บ้านในหนองคายด้วยตนเอง เราไปได้ข่าวว่าเขามีบ้านใหม่จากเพื่อนร่วมงานของเขา แล้วเขาก็หาจังหวะออกจากงานและย้ายบ้านไปอยู่หนองคายเมื่อปีมี่ผ่านมา เขาก็ส่งรูปบ้านใหม่ขณะที่กำลังก่อสร้างมาให้ดูหลายรูป เราคิดว่าเขาเก่งมากที่เลือกบ้านได้ดี และในทำเลที่ดีด้วย บ้านก็สร้างอย่างดี ใช้วัสดุดีมากด้วย นับว่าเขาโชคดีสุดๆ
ภายในเวลาไม่ถึงปี เขาจัดการปรับแรุงดินและปลูกต้นไม้หลากหลายชนิด ตั้งแต่ผลไม้ ไม้ใช้สอยเช่นไผ่เลี้ยง สมุนไพร ไม้ดอก และผักหลายชนิด แถมด้วยกล้วยไม้หลายสิบต้น ที่เปบ่าข้างบ้านที่ซื้อเพิ่มนั้น ตอนนี้อัดแน่นไปด้วยป่าไม้สีเขียว เจาบำรุงดินดีมาก ผลไม้ทุกต้นออกดอกออกผลสมบูร์กว่าที่บ้านเราอีก มะม่วงอกร่องมีลูกใหญ่มาก ส้มซ่าก็มีลูกเต็มต้น ผักหลายชนิดใบงามมาก บวบหอมยามมากและฟักทองก็น่ากินมาก เราเดินถ่ายรูปจนเพลิน แถมเขาต่อครัวไทยออกมา จัดครัวเหมือนบ้านยายเราเลย ที่น่าแปลกใจคือ เขาทำอาหารโดยใช้เตาถ่าน เพราะว่าทำให้อาหารอร่อยมาก เขามีของใช้โบราณที่มาตั้งแต่รุ่นยายหลายอย่าง เราไม่เคยเห็นของโบราณแบบนี้มาก่อน น่าประทับใจในความเป็นคนโบราณของเขามากทีเดียว
His garden has more than forty varieties of plants and herbs. He told me he often gave fresh vegetables to his next door neighbours. He also had an outdoor Thai kitchen in the garden. It amazes me that he has inherited old antique cooking instruments from his grand-mother. What’s more he still cooks with charcoal stove like his grandma. By the way, he is very good at cooking traditional Thai dishes which requires time and rare ingredients. He even makes his own cooking oil and all the curry pastes.
