Tarawih Prayer (sometimes called Teraweh or Taraweh) is a special sunnat prayer only in Ramadan.# header Tarawih in Arabic is a form of jama 'from ترويحة which is defined as "a moment of time to rest". The time of this sunnat prayer is after isya ', usually done in congregation in the mosque. The interesting fact about this prayer is that the Messenger of Allah (SAA) only did it in congregation in 3 occasions. It is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (SAA) then did not continue on the following nights for fear that it would be compulsory for the Muslims (see sub-section of hadith on Tarawih).

Raka'at Salat

There are several practices about the number of rak'ah and the number of greetings in the Tarawih prayer. At the time of the Prophet Muhammad Tarawih prayer was only done three or four times, without any information that mentions the number of raka'atnya. Then Tarawih prayer congregation stopped, because there are fears of being obliged. Only at the time of the caliph Umar Salat Tarawih revived with congregation, with the number of 20 raka'at followed by 3 raka'at witr.

Since then Muslims throughout the world have performed Tarawih prayers every Ramadan night with 20 rak'ahs. Four different sects, the Al-Hanafiyah school (8 rakaat), Al-Malikiyah (some 8 or 20 rak'ahs), Asy-Syafi'iyah (20 rakaat) and Al-Hanabilah (some 8 or 20 rak'ahs). While Umar bin Abdul Aziz as khalifah of the Umayyads in Damascus performed the Tarawih prayer with 36 raka'at. And Ibn Taimiyah runs 40 raka'at.

The first time to establish the Tarawih prayers with only 8 raka'at in history is the opinion of the people of the end times, such as Ash-Shan'ani (w.1182 H), Al-Mubarakfury (1353 H) and Al-Albani. Ash-Shan'ani The Subulus-salam author does not even say that Tarawih prayers are only 8 raka'at, while Al-Mubarakfury indeed prefers Tarawih 8 raka'at prayers, without blaming the raka'at opinion......

The disagreement of whether or not the number of raka'at reaching number 20 is a classic theme that even survives to this day, as did most of the followers of Nahdlatul Ulama [need a reference]. As for the number of general practice greetings are greetings every two raka'at but there are also greetings every four raka'at. So that if Tarawih will be done in 8 raka'at then the formation is the greeting every two rakaat done four times, or the greeting every four raka'at done twice and closed with witir three raka'at as do most of Muhammadiyah followers .

Salat intention

The intention of this prayer, as well as other prayers is quite pronounced in the heart, the most important is the intention only because God Almighty with a sincere heart and expect bliss..
