Making charcoal from coconut shell does sound easy, but to get a good quality should not be random. Quality coconut shell charcoal has low water content, flying substance and high carbon binding power so it can produce perfect combustion.
To make quality coconut shell charcoal can use several ways, namely by using kitchen cage, using holes, and use Kiln / drum. The majority of people use drums as a burning tool. Drums are considered as the least expensive and effective option for charcoal making. With the capital of a 200 liter drum, you are able to produce quality charcoal. But in this article will also be discussed two other ways as a reference and material knowledge for you all. Previously you can also read the article on how to make charcoal husk. You need to prepare a dried coconut shell first to make the burning process faster without a lot of smoke. Clean the shell from the coir, sand and other dirt. Cut the shell into a measuring 2.5 x 2.5 cm in order to fill the burner a lot and evenly.
How to Make Coconut Shell Charcoal Using Drums
Prepare 200 liters used kerosene drum.
Cut the drum cap from its body so it can open the lid.
Create a 10 cm diameter hole in the center of the drum lid. This hole to connect with a chimney as high as 30 cm.
Create a chimney and cover using a zinc material that forms a cylinder as high as 30 cm and paste on the drum lid.
Create 3 rows of holes, each row consisting of 4 holes 13 mm in diameter with a distance of each hole 30 cm. The number of holes 12 pieces.
Include burned bait like paper / dried leaves on the bottom of the drum.
Place a wood / bamboo perpendicular to the center of the drum with a diameter of 10 cm with a length of 1 m.
Insert the shell into the drum until it is full.
After that, pull the log slowly to form a hole in the middle of the drum.
Cover the drums and install the chimney.
During the combustion process, the air hole in the lower row is opened, while the hole in the other row is covered with clay.
When red coals appear in the bottom hole, it indicates the charcoal burning is completed at the bottom.
Close the row of holes below and open the second row. Repeat until the top row.
The charcoal combustion process has been completed when the smoke coming out of the chimney is already tips and bluish color.
When it is in this state, all holes are closed tightly, including chimneys.
Make sure the air does not enter the drum by closing the drum with the ground so that the charcoal does not become ash.
Allow the drum to cool for about 6 hours.
After the cold, the drum cover is opened and separate the charcoal, raw charcoal and ash.
