The ringgit can be broken down into 100 cents and has banknotes worth RM 100, RM50, RM20, RM10, RM5, and RM2; as well as RM1 coins, 50 cents, 20 cents, 10 cents, 5 cents, and 1 cent. The name "Ringgit" comes from the side of Spanish-toothed silver money that was used extensively in ancient times.
Brunei Dollar is also known as ringgit by local people.
