Bible study: To the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise be honor and glory

in eternal •  3 years ago

The first letter to Timothy describes God from his divine attributes and his gifts: "To the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise be honor and glory.", 1 Timothy 1:17.
Thomas Aquinas explains that God is the perfection itself, his gifts and qualities are perfections, we cannot attribute imperfections to God. When a quality of God is only his own, we say that it is a divine attribute, for example, the eternity.
Only God is eternal, eternity is the possession of all time, past, present and future. God exists from an eternal present, we cannot apply temporal concepts to God; for example, if I affirm that God was loving before creating the world, the statement is heresy.

God is invisible, the Bible explains to us, God can only be perceived with the good intelligence or spiritual gift of knowledge ("Blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God", Matthew 5:3), because only the invisible is eternal. God's creation proceeds from invisible realities: “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”, 2 Corinthians 4:18.
When a quality of God is transmissible to the man we say that this quality is a supernatural gift such as wisdom and immortality.
God is immortal but can transmit in a limited way on the physical plane to men this quality, this gift is also called "longevity": "To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life", Romans 2:7.
Longevity in the time of Jesus was considered a mystical secret, the average life at that time was around 30 years. This knowledge was sought by many kings and emperors including Alexander the Great who died at the age of 33.
Wisdom is the very essence of God, to speak of wisdom is to speak of God, the Bible explains that God is the wisest being in the universe. Glory is also a gift from God, glory is the perfect fame: "Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.", Matthew 5:48.
