Think About Your Loved Ones - Think Eternitas

in eternitas •  6 years ago  (edited)

I have a friend who I will call Fred. In 2012, Fred lost his father to a sudden illness. The pain was unimaginable and the family was distraught as the loss of such a pivotal character. Some months ater, some of Freds uncles showed up at his home in the city. They claimed *tradition* allowed them to take their choice of their late brothers property and even dictate how his family would receive stipends. Fred fought with everything he had, from legal procedures to heavy prayers. In the end Fred was able to repel the greedy extended family and keep most of his fathers properties.

My second friend Jerry wasn't so lucky. His extended family seized his fathers houses and took over the family business claiming Jerry(the first son) was more interested in art than preserving culture. This led to physical confrontations, altercations and legal battles that were all rather too expensive for him. We later found out that Jerrys dad had indeed left all his estate to his wife and kids but his uncles had connived with the family lawyer to destroy the will.

So what did I learn from this?

It's better to be Safe than Sorry

While none of us wish to die tomorrow, the choice is ultimately out of our hands. It is therefore imperative we make proper arrangements so that the loved ones we leave behind can be well taken care of.
