AKASHA Launches Web Version For Browsers With MetaMask and IPFS Extensions

in ethereum •  7 years ago

In a blog post published yesterday, the AKASHA team announced their web version of the AKASHA social network.

For those of you unfamiliar with this product, AKASHA is a project built on top of the Ethereum platform by Mihai Alisie and his team. Until now, the product only had a desktop version which required a sync with the Rinkeby Ethereum test network.

The launch article is really interesting, albeit a bit long (a 17minutes read) but I recommend to really have a look at it, as it touches a lot more other stuff than just an alpha launch (hint: it talks a lot about privacy and Facebook). If, for some reason, you don't have time to read it, here is the TL/DR version:

  • AKASHA won't store your data, the app is a truly decentralized, peer-to-peer platform, with no central server
  • AKASHA won't hunt you with ads
  • there is no token yet, (apart from the AETH which is used for testing ATM), )but if there will be a need for a public token which will solve "an otherwise unsolvable problem" they will create one
  • obviously, if there's no token, there's also no ICO
  • if you want to access the web version, point a Chrome / Firefox browser with both MetaMask (set on the Rinkeby test network) and IPFS extensions to http://beta.akasha.world

That's what you will see if you do this:

After you accept the Terms of Service, the dashboard will open and you will be prompted to claim some free AETH (the test token inside the beta version).

After a few moments, the faucet will release 1 AETH and you will see something like this:

Please note that if you were one of the AKASHA alpha version testers, you will need to import your old accounts into beta, there are instructions on how to do it here.

Seems steemit but using BCH...
Hope Steemit guys react against the competency soon

I know Yours from long ago. Not very dangerous in terms of competition, but, to be honest, I hope some dangerous competitor to Steemit will appear soon, that will give a much needed wake up call to the guys on charge :))

Yours is just a tipping center look at minds.com free way to earn(aka steemit voting) plus tips

this new to me, I may try it because it is always better to be one of the pioneers, like the whales of steemit today. thanks you for sharing.

I visited the launch article. It seemingly new to me. AKASHA is now accessible by Mist and classic web browsers running the MetaMask and IPFS’ happens to be a new inclusion to the project.
I’ll love to know more though, most about the part that it also doesn’t disturb with ads. I do not like to see Ads pop up anywhere, it is usually distracting

Seems interesting. ..I didn't knew about AKASHA. ...being built on top of ethereum platform is what that makes it interesting to me.thanks for telling.

AKASHA won't hunt you with ads
MY favourite. This is the very reason I despise facebook . ads!!

Glad to know that AKASHA project is Powered by the Ethereum world computer. This is another good news, after NASA grant to support a research program which will examine the application of Ethereum-based Blockchain technology in developing a secure computing system to be used in deep space.

Interesting now i need to visit the launch article to get full information about this, thanks D

I was alpha testing it ages ago and it annoyed me quite a bit (even allowing for the fact it was alpha) so I stopped using it. Might give the beta a whirl (and possibly even the webapp if I'm able to get on with my old id) and see how it feels. Thanks for the reminder XD

Oh, its been around for awhile. I don't think that I wanna use it, I am on too many social platforms already.

I am cutting down my social media consumption.

Thanks for this update. looking closer at AKASHA.

Very informative updates, thanks for sharing.

Wow !!
A exciting update...Hope that MetaMask and IPFS Extensions will become more effective. It also another good update for us as AKASHA social network.

The name of the social platform is even scary. C'mon, Mihai Alisie should work on having sweeter name.
IMHO

If a user is to run a "node" on their PC, how will the network react if a friend/follower is offline when data is requested from them. Also, will a node be runnable on a home server system, allowing for higher-availability and easier backups of personal data.

the first major problem that i see with Akasha is that its built upon Ethereum, which wont be able to scale anytime soon if ever
