The Pineapple Flower

Scientific name: Eucomis autumnalis ~ Also known as: Pineapple lily; Wildepynappel, Krulkoppie, Umathunga

The Pineapple flower is a lovely deciduous summer lilly that grows between 50 - 60 cm high from a large bulb.
It's broad leaves are strap-shaped, wavy and softtextured in appearance and in time of bloom it yields a lovely 60 to 75 cm wide,yellow-green flower of about 60 cm tall, lending it a great deal of its aesthetic beauty, that adds greatly to any gardens appeal.
This flower occurs naturally in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Free State and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa. but can be easily propegated worldwide in sunny areas by planting the bulb in rich soil.here it can enjoy full sun or partial shade. These plants perform great in fertile compost soil that is well drained. It can also be propagated by offsets, seeds, leaf cuttings and tissue culture.

The flower of the Pineapple plant is not only beautiful but also pleasant smelling, and attracts bees as well as butterflies to your garden.

Medicinal uses for the Pinapple Lilly

The bulb can be used for

  • back-ache
  • to assist in healing fractures in post-operative recovery
  • they are traditionally used to treat fever
  • treatment of hang-over
  • easing urinary complaints
  • curing stomach ache
  • relieving colic
  • decreasing flatulence
  • treating syphilis.

Hi @breezin, great article. I have seen these flowers in the wild a few times whilst hiking in the grasslands of Mpumalanga, but I had no idea of their medicinal value.

The beauty of South Africa is that we have such a diverse array of naturally occurring medicinal plants!
